Jonathon Gomez Crowned SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Champ

TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (January 24, 2010) Jonathon Gomez, a rising star in NASCAR and racing on the west coast, celebrated his first touring series championship this past Saturday night at the Crystal Place in Bakersfield, CA. Gomez capped a successful 2010 campaign by claiming the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour championship in his first year of competition in the ten year old series.

Gomez scored two victories and closed out the campaign with eight consecutive top five finishes to etch his name in west coast racing history with his championship.

“I just want to thank everyone again for the opportunity they gave me this year," stated the 28-year old champion from Twin Falls, Idaho. "SRL Tour car owner Bob Strandwold gave us an opportunity to compete at a high level and it is great to reward him with a championship. My team and my sponsors; Century Boatland, Heritage Cattle, United Oil and my Dad (John Gomez) made all of this possible."

"I’m just so thankful for the opportunity to be in a position to win a championship in a major series like the SRL. My crew chief Ron (Copeland) and Craig (Raudman, on the West series) did an excellent job preparing the car all year. We had no mechanical failures all season which is what it took to win this championship against all the great teams in the SRL.”

Gomez also competed last season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and finished sixth in the final standings to cap his first full year in the West's oldest stock car series. Gomez scored three top five and six top ten performances with his best result of second place at Iowa Speedway last May. Gomez averaged a 10.2 finishing position in all races and completed 1,700 of 1,705 laps (99.6%) to lead all competitors. He has started 20 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races since 2008 scoring ten top ten finishes.

Gomez will defend his SRL championship in 2011 while also competing for the series title in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. The SRL will kick off its 11th season Saturday, April 2 at the "Bullring" in Las Vegas, NV while the NKNPS will launch its 58th season February 24 at Phoenix (AZ) International Raceway. His 2011 campaign is set to begin this weekend at the annual Toyota All-Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA. Gomez will compete in all three featured races at the Showdown.

The prestigious event will be highlighted by the 225-lap NASCAR K&N Pro Series all-star race Saturday night Jan. 29. The schedule also includes a 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model race on Friday, Jan. 28, and a 50-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race on Saturday night.

“If we’re going to go down there, we might as well do some racing,” Gomez said. “We think it would say a lot for our team and maybe get more exposure if we went out there and did really good in all three races. If we can go out there and get a podium finish in each event, I think that will say something for our team and for me as a driver. We’ll have a lot of fun doing it, too.”
