2013 ASA NORTHWEST SPRINTCAR RACING ASSOCIATION SEASON IN REVIEW; ASA MEMBER TRACK SCHEDULE: OCTOBER 25-27, 2013

Daytona Beach, FL (October 24, 2013) – The ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association wrapped up its 2013 10 race schedule after a premature end to its season when a late September date at Shasta Speedway was cancelled and Andy Alberding, who won his first ASA NSRA title in 2007, won his fourth series title (2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013).

The series visited six tracks in three states and the Canadian province of British Columbia. The ASA NSRA brings the fastest asphalt race cars in the Northwest to short tracks throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia.

The ASA NSRA opened its 2013 at Evergreen Speedway with series defending champion Andy Alberding taking the win.

The series shifted to Idaho in late May and ran the co-sanctioned Diamond Cup weekend with the ASA Western Winged Sprintcars at Meridian Speedway with Mike Murgoitio winning both races while Bryan Wurf took the Diamond Cup XXV diamond ring.

Running again with the ASA WWS the series moved to Stateline Speedway in Post Falls, ID for its annual “Super Shoe Show” where 59-year-old Rick Brown led all 40-laps en route to the win in the main event.

Another two-race schedule saw the two series running at Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, OR on July 19-20 with Johnny Geisler and Matt Hein, who was racing at his home track, notching victories.

A return trip to Evergreen Speedway on August 3 saw Matt Hein win his second straight 2013 win en route to his third straight and fourth overall Rory Price Memorial.

In conjunction with the ASA WWS, the ASA NSRA sprint cars travelled to Canada for a two-race weekend at Western Speedway in Victoria, B.C. where Scotty Aumen rewrote the record books in a big way at the Daffodil Cup smashing the track qualifying record en route to becoming the first driver to win five Daffodil Cup races.

The 42nd running of the prestigious Daffodil Cup, the oldest sprint car race in Canada, saw Aumen lead one lap, the last, on Friday night while Jeff Montgomery took the Saturday show. The winner of the Daffodil Cup is the driver who accumulates the most points from the two races.

The ASA NSRA season came to a close August 31 at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, B.C. with Aumen continuing his hot streak and taking the checkers. Aumen, a British Columbia native, missed five races during the season but was still able to finish eighth in the final championship point standings after winning two of the series final three races.

Alberding took the early lead in the ASA NSRA standings after his season-opening win and paced the point race the entire season enroute to the title despite the lone win. He did secure five top-five finishes during the season.

Finishing just nine points behind the series champion was Geisler, who finished the season with one win and seven top-five finishes.

Hein finished third in the final standings after recording two wins on the season and he had five top-five finishes.

ASA NSRA sprint car drivers hold the all-time track records at 17 tracks throughout the Northwest and those same drivers have won in various forms of dirt and asphalt racing and many have numerous championships to their credit.

“Our group thanks so many for their support as our sport could not succeed without dedicated race fans and sponsors,” said Alberding. “We look forward to bringing the most exciting and entertaining racing for you and your family.”

Despite the late cancellation of the scheduled season-ender at Shasta Speedway, ASA NSRA officials are having discussions to make a visit in 2014.

The ASA NSRA will celebrate its 2013 season and look forward to the future when it holds its annual banquet this weekend at the Monarch Hotel in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, October 26.

The day will begin from 10:00 AM  to 2:00 PM with the series annual membership and rules meeting with all drivers and owners invited to attend. The banquet kicks-off with a Cocktail Hour at 6:00 PM, Dinner at 7:00 PM, Awards Presentation at 8:00 PM followed by raffles, 50/50, games and bench racing from 9:30 PM to midnight.

“Terrible” Tim To Cap Off Tough 2013 Season -

Tacoma, Washington –
9-12-2013 – This Saturday will mark the final race of the 2013 Super Late Model season at Evergreen Speedway. “Terrible” Tim McDougald will join his fellow competitors for the first time during this racing season, as he brings the #68 KMB design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves Toyota Camry to Monroe, Washington for the season finale.
“It’s been a long season for me,” claimed a noticeably humble McDougald. “I’ve had to step back quite a bit this year. We started out trying to build a new car. Some changes in marketing strategies meant that I was losing my marketing partners that have been with me for the past 6 years. We’ve been very fortunate to have a great team of partners for so long now. But it’s a new day, and we’re trying to regroup and move forward. The build of the new car has taken much longer than we had planned. Our budget didn’t allow for weekly racing and building the new car, so we’ve been pretty focused on that instead of on racing. That’s been tough for me, not racing each week. It kills me to not be out there. As a driver, you want to be in the car. But you do what you have to do.”
Returning to the track for Championship Night, McDougald will have a slightly different focus for this night. “We feel like we’ve fallen behind quite a bit by not being out there all year,” said McDougald. “So we’re trying to use this event as testing for next year. I’ve got some things I want to try, quite a bit different than what we’ve been doing in the past. The car hasn’t been that great previously so we’re looking for a new plan, some new ideas, and we want to use this night as a test session for next year so that we might get a jump on this new car, maybe start next year a bit better than we’ve been.”
Sitting on the sidelines hasn’t been all bad for McDougald. Most nights you can find him in manning the radio for his teammate and brother, Tommy Rasmussen. “I really enjoy spotting for Tommy,” said “Terrible” Tim. “It’s something I started doing for him before I started driving Late Models and I’ve grown to really like it. It’s pretty exciting, too exciting at times! I like to think I’m pretty good at it, and it helps me stay connected to the sport. Don’t get me wrong, there’s days where it really kills me to have to watch the race I want to be in. But at least it keeps me involved in it.”
Looking forward to next year, McDougald and his #68 Toyota Camry are in a re-building mode, trying to return to the position he was in just a few short years ago. “We’ve had a tough couple of years, no doubt,” said McDougald. “We’ve gone from a series where we were definitely a major player, competing for wins and championships, to a mid-pack car in a series we just weren’t ready for. After the LLMRS folded we had to find a new home, and this is where we felt the most welcomed. The competition is tough here, these guys are for real. And right now, we just don’t have all the elements to compete for wins. But we haven’t given up, we plan to have the new car done for 2014
and we think it will really help us move forward. We’re trying to rebuild our marketing package and find some new partners who are interested in not just having their name on a car, but standing out from the crowd and in the community. We like to have fun and we like to show the community what we’re all about. We like to get out there and be seen. We think we offer a great platform for any business to really build a presence in the local community and build more visibility for their brand. Hopefully we can find the right partners who see the benefits we offer and want to come on board.”
Don’t miss “Terrible” Tim McDougald’s return to his NASCAR Home Track of Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington this coming Saturday, September 14th, as the 2013 Super Late Model racing season comes to an end.

ASA NORTHWEST SPRINTCAR RACING ASSOCIATION, ASA MEMBER TRACKS WEEKEND SCHEDULE AUGUST 2-4, 2013

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (August 1, 2013) – The ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association make their way to Evergreen Speedway in Monroe Washington this weekend, as they host the Rory Price Memorial on August 3.

Seven years ago a tragic accident jolted the racing community when Rory Price, a racer, friend, father, husband and son, lost his life far too early.  Since his passing the Rory Price memorial has become a sanctuary for those who knew Price, and a time to celebrate the extraordinary life of one of our own.

Price’s family and friends have used their loss to rally together in an effort to carry on Rory’s love for open-wheel racing.  Thanks to their countless hours of work and generous donations they have made the Rory Price Memorial one of the most prestigious races in the Northwest and have raised thousands of dollars towards The Rory Price Family Fund which ensures Rory’s daughter a secure future.

More than 20 winged sprint cars are expected Saturday night with Washington’s home state drivers looking to keep the winner in-state.

Todd Coleman, Robert Beck and Greg Middendorf were all close to Price, and any one of the three would love to hoist the RPM trophy over their head.  Beck was last year’s early leader but his night was cut short when he lost a power steering line, subsequently ending his night.  Perhaps the most surprising and exciting name for this race is, Billy Kennelly, who was one of Price's best friends, and for the first time ever will competed in the race that honors his long time friend.

Expected to make the trek south from Canada are Dave Salamandick, Chris Schmelzle, Ron Larson, Guy Barrett, Scott Aumen, Robbie Haslam and Matt Mansell.

Fan favorite, Sierra Jackson has had some bumps along her 2013 campaign, but hopes to use the RPM to set her season back on track.  She is sure to have her hands full with fellow Idaho driver and teammate Johnny “The Jet” Giesler, who looks for his first ASA/NSRA championship and is consistently one of the fastest competitors.

Three Oregon drivers, combining for ten ASA/NSRA championships between them, will make the tow including Matt Hein. No driver has been more dominant in RPM races than Hein, winning three of the six races including the last two while also securing the 2008 and 2009 ASA/NSRA championship.  Andy Alberding, the 2007, 2010 and the defending series champion and current point leader, searches for his first RPM victory.  Lastly, the one known as “Quick” Rick Brown, he is the only driver to ever win an unprecedented five ASA/NSRA championships.

The ASA-sanctioned ProAutoSports is in Airway Heights, WA for the weekend offering three-days of track time at the Spokane County Raceway, a 2.3-mile road course with some challenging medium-speed corners with elevation changes and some tight technical segments.

37th Annual Portland Historic Races Preview

HERE IS WHAT IS COMING AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY‏

Jeremy Doss Ready to Tackle Tough Madera Track in SRL

UPPERLAKE, CA (June 27, 2013) 16-year old Jeremy Doss from Upper Lake, CA has been waiting since March to return to Madera (CA) Speedway. His first outing in the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour netted a 14th place finish, disappointing the rookie competitor. This Saturday he returns with confidence and enthusiasm for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Firecracker "125" at the central California oval.

Since March a lot has changed. First the team has got a much better handle on the new Pathfinder chassis they have been working on. Second, Doss has shown significant improvement in each of the three SRL races since Madera. And lastly, Doss is coming off a dominating performance in the Southern Idaho "200" weekend where he scored two big victories and pocketed more than $12,000 in winnings.

"Winning in Idaho was really a big deal," Doss said. "We raced our SRL car both nights and both nights we had to come from the tail of the field to get the wins which is not easy. The RMCS guys are a bunch of great racers and we had to really work hard to get the wins."

Naturally, that kind of success will breed new confidence in the team that has struggled to find the sweet spot in their rookie foray into the SRL. "We have been doing a lot of R&D for Pathfinder," Doss offered. "Dale (Dodds) and my dad (Mike Doss) have been working really hard to get the chassis to work and we are really close. I am looking for a much better result at Madera this time around."

Madera is a tricky one-thrid mile oval that has hosted the Southwest Series for many years and has been the sight of some of the best short track action in California. The tight banked corners produce great side-by-side racing and if you are going to win at Madera you will have to be good both high and low.

"Obviously qualifying is critical," Doss pointed out. "Start up front and end up front is the goal. I think we will be pretty good on Saturday."

Doss is currently fifth in the point standings for the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour just 19-points out of fourth place. He is the rookie-of-the-year point leader in a stout field of twelve rookie competitors. He is also second in the Young Guns championship which will reward the top finishing driver under the age of 23 with a separate championship.

Brett Thompson and Team Head West for Sonoma Roadcourse Event

JEROME, IDAHO (June 18, 2013)- Brett Thompson, driver of the #61 RTTI Chevrolet in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, is looking to put the (bad) racing luck behind him this weekend at Sonoma (CA) Raceway.
Brett Thompson's RTTI sponsored NASCAR K&N Pro Series Chevrolet.
Thompson, who likes roadcourse racing, knows the Carneros 200 on Saturday, June 22 will be a pivotal race for the team.

The 1.99-mile road course at Sonoma is considered one of the most challenging in North America and is set in the picturesque wine country of Northern California. Thompson has made 14 career NKNPS starts on roadcourses since he first joined the series back in 2001. His best finish to date is a fourth place performance at Portland (OR) Int'l Raceway back in 2009.

"We have had really good race cars for each race this year but we have had horrible luck the last two races," Thompson said. "We are optimistic about this weekend. We are just going to run our own race and hopefully we will be among the top five or six late in the going. The strategy we use will depend on how and we are running."

Over the years, teams have used various strategies to score the victory at Sonoma. Conventional wisdom would have teams pitting early, as soon as they reach the fuel window, giving those drivers the edge in track position late in the race. Others have pitted for fuel early and then ducked in late in the race for tires gaining a grip advantage but losing out on track position.

"Will (Harris - crew chief) and the entire team have worked hard all season and a solid run on Saturday will go a long way," Thompson offered. "Track position at Sonoma is usually what you look for late in the race since it is so hard to pass but we have used both strategies," Thompson said. "The big variable is always the restarts heading up the hill at turn one and two. If they get stacked up, it just accordions all the way back and it can ruin your day in a hurry. Once things get single file then you can really make some moves."

Thompson is currently 19-points out of fifth place in the standings and only 57-points back from the top spot with ten races to go in the 15-race schedule. "If we can put a solid string of races together and some among the top five have some trouble then we would be right back up there," Thompson said.

16-year old Hannah Newhouse who drives for the Thompson Motorsports team in the CarbonX Rocky Challenge Series posted a ninth place effort this past Friday in round three of the 2013 RMCS championship. Newhouse maintains the fifth place in the standings just 19-points behind fourth place. She also is locked into a tight battle for the A-1 Rookie-of-the-Year title with Meridian, Idaho's Chris Fenton.

Newhouse also competed in the Southern Idaho "200" on Saturday finishing in the 14th position at the conclusion of the 200-lap special event.

"I learned so much this weekend and I am so proud of the Thompson Motorsports Team," Newhouse said. "While our finishes were not what we had hoped, we ran all the laps and had a clean race car at the end of the weekend."

Newhouse will be back in action this weekend in the first ever dirt race for the ASA Pro Truck Series as the series visits Atomic Speedway outside Blackfoot, Idaho. Newhouse is currently second in the championship standings just six points out of the top spot.

Newhouse will be back in her RTTI Dodge for the RMCS on Saturday, July 6 at Rocky Mountain Raceways located in SLC, Utah.

Doss Doubles Down in Southern Idaho "200" Triumph

BOISE, IDAHO (June 18, 2013) Jeremy Doss from Upper Lake, CA reined supreme at the first annual Century Motorsports & Marine Southern Idaho "200" this past weekend at Magic Valley speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho. Backing up his popular win from Friday night, Doss drove to the front of the stellar field from his 16th starting position to win the inaugural event over fellow Northern California driver and friend Trevor Cristiani.
Event sponsor John Gomez (L), 3rd place Ryan Wells (Middle L), event winner Jeremy Doss (Middle), and 2nd place Trevor Cristiani (R). Linda Brittsan photo.

Doss, the current SRL Southwest Tour Rookie-of-the-Year leader, set the mark in qualifying posting the fastest lap of the twenty-four competitors who made their way to Southern Idaho for the 200-lap special event. Doss toured the 1/3-mile paved oval in 14.303 seconds, just off the pace he set the night before in the RMCS event. Rounding out the top five qualifiers were Jeff Hillock, Jonathon Gomez, Eric Schmidt, and Kris McKean.

The event would combine the regular RMCS race rules, including an invert, with a traditional format for the two 100-lap segments. Over the first 100-lap segment, driver's would be awarded points for qualifying (top 6), finishing position, and passing points. Those points would determine the starting position for the start of the second 100-lap segment.

Bruce Quale led the field to green based on the 16-car invert putting fast qualifier Doss outside row eight to start the first segment. Quale led the first four circuits before giving way to Jason Jefferson, who made the tow up to Idaho from the Lake Havasu, AZ area. Jefferson would led the next 95-laps heading into the halfway break.

Over the first 100-lap there five cautions for single car spins and all competitors were able to continue. The break came with Jefferson leading the field. The good news for Doss was that he scored the the most points in the first segment putting him on the the pole for the second segment. That spelled bad news for the rest of the drivers.

The second segment started with Doss on the pole and Eric Schmidt alongside followed by John Dillon, Jason Jefferson, and Jim Wulfenstein. The second six lined up with Kris McKean, Trevor Cristiani, Ryan Wells, Chris Fenton, and Tom Elam rounding out the top ten.

Wulfenstein who ran the entire first segment on seven cylinders called it quits after a right front tire went down midway through the segment. Dillon's hopes at victory went up in smoke when he lost an engine on lap 142. He was running third at the time.

Trevor Cristiani made his way to second by lap 180 with Wells in tow. Elam and Jefferson rounded out the top five. The top five would stay the same over the final 20 laps that included a restart with ten to go.

In the end, Doss was too strong and held off Cristiani with a margin of victory at 1.5 seconds. Ryan Wells persevered and rallied to finish third with Tom Elam driving up from his 19th starting position to finish fourth. Jason Jefferson rounded out the top five finishers in the inaugural event.

"I was concerned when the fast cars started right up behind me towards the end, but we were able to pull it off. We had a good car last night and we had a good car today - my crew did a great job and it really paid off,"said the soft-spoken 16-year-old Doss.

Doss won the $10,000 first place money adding to an already sweet victory. "I'll have a happy dad and it will make for a nice ride home," he added.

Cristiani, just two years Doss' senior, recently relocated from Northern California but now resides in Meridian, Idaho. "We threw everything but the kitchen sink into the car during the break," said the 18-year-old driver. "The car wasn't perfect but it was good enough to finish were we did. It was hard for me to get a good restart but I was just so happy to come though and finished second."

For his part, Wells was happy with the third place result. "I did not know what to expect when we came down but we had a fun time," Wells offered. "We will definitely be back as the RMCS puts on a great race and the competitors are really clean racers."

A surprised and exhausted fourth place finisher Tom Elam. "I am flat wore out," Elam said. "That was a lot of fun and driving up through the field made for a lot of work. I can't believe we finished were we did."

Disappointed with the finish and excited about the weekend was fifth place finishers Jason Jefferson who led 95 laps in the race. "We had a really good car we just missed the setup during the break," Jefferson said. "Jeremy (Doss) is quite a racer. That kid has got a lot of talent." Jefferson also finished in the runner-up the night before in the 100-lap RMCS feature.

Event sponsor and a good friend to all in west coast racing, John Gomez was happy with the event. "The guys that come up for this put on a great show," Gomez stated. "We look forward to building the Century Motorsports & Marine Southern Idaho "200" for the future."

Plans are already underway for next season making the Southern Idaho "200" a must attend event.

The RMCS inverts up to the top 20 from qualifying putting the fast qualifiers at the back to start each race. This format ensures race fans see what they paid for and that is passing. Each driver is awarded three points per position gained in the event. Points are also awarded for qualifying and heat race finishes. Through the history of the series, the winning driver has averaged a 14th place starting position. To ensure competition, the RMCS pays it purse based on total point accumulation for the event and provides several special performance awards at each race.
