Thompson Posts Second Place Finish in Caution Free RMCS Event

Brett Thompson Climbed back into Championship Form at Magic Valley

JEROME, IDAHO (June 14, 2010) Brett Thompson of Jerome, Idaho claimed his third top three finish in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series this past Saturday at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, ID in round four of the ten race series.

Thompson qualified a disappointing 11th quick for the race causing him to lose points to the other leaders and denying him the opportunity to earn as many passing points as the fast qualifiers. Thompson made up a few points winning his 12-lap heat race.

Thompson started the 100-lap main event on the outside of row two. Even though his car did not qualify well, his heat race performance proved the car was fast and he immediately set sail on the outside groove. By lap three he had muscled his way into the lead and set a torrid pace.

Thompson would lead 41-laps before a tight condition slowed his momentum and allowed his pursuers to close the gap. Eventual race winner John Dillon caught Thomspon in traffic and took the point on lap 45. And while Thompson lost ground to Dillon over the closing laps, he maintained his advantage on the rest of the field in a race that went caution free. The second place finish was Thompson's best career result to date in the popular Late Model series.

"My car just started to skate across the track and I could not turn it," Thompson said. "I am happy with the second place finish but a win would have been a whole lot better. Qualifying hurt us. In this series you must qualify well in order to put yourself in position to earn the points. We left a lot of points on the table so we are going to go back and do our homework."

The race went caution free and took only 26 minutes and 8 seconds to complete. "This is a really good series with a lot of talented drivers," Thompson said. "I am sure the fans saw a great show. This type of race shows that you cannot be the least bit off because it is over so quick. We made up some ground in the championship since the leaders finished behind us and we will keep chipping away."

Thompson is tied for third place in the point standings on the strength of three top three finishes in the first four races this season. He is 54-points out of second place and closed the gap to within 108-points of first place. The RMCS inverts up to the top 20 qualifiers in series race and then awards passing points based on the driver's original starting position. The series pays its purse based on total point accumulation for the event.

The next RMCS for Thompson is Saturday, June 26 at Meridian (ID) Speedway. The 100-lap race will mark the first race for the series on the newly re-configured and paved historic quarter-mile oval.

Thompson Motorsports drivers Drew Reitsman and Kent Jensen were also be in action in the Intermountain Pro Truck Series race as part of the racing card on Saturday night at MVS. Jensen scored his third top ten finish of the season while Reitsma ended his night on the hook. The next IPTS race is Saturday, June 26 back at MVS.
