Safety Solutions, Safety Tip of the Month

Choose a Polyester seat belt.

There are two types of seat belt materials in the market place in the United States, Nylon and Polyester. While nylon is not even legal for use in your passenger car and hasn't been since the mid 60's, SFI does allow it to be used in racing. Nylon has some inherent problems that make it less desirable than Polyester.

Sunlight-

The US Military has done studies on seat belts and have proven that at the end of two years the seat belt is at 13% of its original strength!

Moisture-

Nylon also gets weaker from moisture. It attracts moisture. What does that mean to you? If you're a dirt racer, every time you wash the car you are making the belts weaker. Even if you're not washing the belts, they are attracting humidity out of the air, making them weaker.

Elongation-

Nylon has a 15-20% stretch rate. This allows the driver to come out of the seat increased distances, allowing the driver to hit things like the cage, steering wheel, maybe the wall or any number of things that shouldn't be hit by a driver. This movement can cause over rotation, which can contribute to possible injuries of the back. Polyester is from 5 to 12% elongation providing better control.
