LOUDON, N.H. (June 24, 2010) — Pacific Northwest native Tayler Malsam and the NASCAR Nationwide Series leave the Midwest behind this weekend, heading instead to the Granite State on the Atlantic seaboard.
The New England 200 is slated for 12:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The race will be broadcast on ESPN starting with NASCAR Countdown at 11:30 a.m. Additional coverage will be provided by SPEED, which will televise practice sessions at 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Friday, and qualifying at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
After standalone races at Nashville, Kentucky and Wisconsin, the Nationwide Series will rejoin the top-tier Cup series at New Hampshire. Cup regulars including Kyle Busch — Malsam’s team owner for seven NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races earlier this season — Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Elliott Sadler and Carl Edwards are expected to compete in the Nationwide race along with IndyCar star Danica Patrick.
The New England 200 will be Malsam’s fourth race in the series, all in the No. 10 Toyota Camry for Braun Racing. Iron Horse Jeans will once again the primary sponsor for the Sammamish, Wash., native at NHMS. The 1.058-mile oval at New Hampshire is most flat, and although it is nearly twice as large, it bears a striking resemblance to the “paperclip” at Martinsville, Va. Although Malsam finished 20th in the NASCAR truck series race at New Hampshire last year — limping home with a broken shock — he had success earlier this year at Martinsville, running solidly in the top-10 before a blown tire with two laps to go relegated him to 14th.
The 23 Nationwide Series races at New Hampshire have produced 23 different winners, with Busch winning the race last year from the pole — one of just two drivers to go to Victory Lane at NHMS from the pole. Winners at New Hampshire have come from starting spots as deep in the field as 22nd, which is good news for Malsam, who is still learning the ins and outs of the Nationwide Series car.
While he hasn’t qualified as fast as he’d like, the 21-year-old has charged to the front in all of his series starts. Last weekend on the road course at Road America, smart driving resulted in a mostly dent-free car and a 15th-place finish after Malsam started 28th. He wound up 11th in his series debut at Nashville after starting in the rear of the field due to an engine change, and at Kentucky he advanced 15 places from starting 31st before an ill-timed pass resulted in contact that ended his night.
