ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 17, 2010) — Tayler Malsam’s stint in the NASCAR Nationwide Series continues this weekend with the series’ first visit to Road America, a 4.048-mile 14-turn road course near Elkhart Lake, Wis.
The Pacific Northwest native will once again be in the No. 10 Toyota Camry for Braun Racing in Saturday’s Bucyrus 200, which will be broadcast at noon (PT) on EPSN2.
“It’s going to be a great addition to the schedule,” Malsam said of Road America, which took the place of The Milwaukee Mile on the Nationwide schedule after the state of Wisconsin was unable to find a promoter for the race. “I haven’t driven in a stock car on a road course for a long time — it should be fun.”
Malsam finished third in an ARCA series race in 2008 on the road course at New Jersey Motorsports Park, and he has road-course experience racing in the Formula TR series and while karting. The Sammamish, Wash., native will have two more chances to enjoy turning left and right after Road America, which is the first of three road courses the Nationwide Series will visit in 2010. Malsam is slated to run a total of 13 Nationwide races for Braun Racing, including Watkins Glen (Aug. 7) in New York and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Aug. 29) in Montreal.
The switch of venues means the Nationwide Series will continue its 17-year streak of racing in the Badger State, but although the series hasn't raced at Road America before, NASCAR’s top series has. On Aug. 12, 1956, Tim Flock won a Cup event in the only other national series NASCAR race held at Road America.
Designed by Clif Tufte, a trained civil engineer, Road American was built on 525 acres of Wisconsin farmland and opened in April 1955. Millions of dollars in improvements have been made throughout the years, but the original 4.048-mile, 14-turn configuration has never been altered.
To prepare for this weekend’s race, teams will be allowed an extra day of practice on Thursday before official race weekend activities begin the following day. That’s a bonus for Malsam, who will be working with an interim crew chief. That’s because NASCAR penalized Braun Racing by suspending for two races, beginning with Road America, the crew chiefs for the No. 10 and No. 38 for a tire-swapping infraction during the Nashville race two weeks ago.
“I think we’ll be fine; a road course is more about the driver than the setup,” Malsam said. “And whoever Braun brings in to be the crew chief will be solid on strategy, so I’m not worried.”
Both of Malsam’s races in the Nationwide Series for Braun began the same, with the 21-year-old charging to the front. At his series debut in Nashville he finished 11th after starting in the rear of the field due to an engine change, and last weekend at Kentucky he advanced 15 places from starting 31st before an ill-timed pass resulted in contact that ended his night with a 35th-place finish.
