DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Tuesday, May 24, 2011) - If you asked John Skinner who has the most feature wins so far this season, he would say it was Mother Nature. But, the Promoter of Southern Oregon Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Medford, OR, is determined to have drivers win and not the weather.
Wet and muddy conditions in their pits were the reason for the delay to the start of their 2011 season. But the green flag finally waved on Saturday, May 7 and will now continue all the way to September 24.
"This is not the way to start the season, but if this is the only time we had to cancel, best to get it out of the way now," Skinner said. "I was ready for some racing just like our competitors and fans. It felt great to open the gates for both, everyone was hungry for some great short track dirt racing."
Fans were treated to some great racing on opening night. Jeremy Richey picked up $1,000 for the Modified A-Main win. Vern Wheeler won in the Sprints with Duane Orsburn in the Street Stocks. Parker Jones won in the Super 4's.
While Skinner is excited to get the season opener completed, he is looking forward to an exciting 2011 season schedule. As an avid cyclist, Skinner knows that each stage, or event, has a special meaning towards the overall season success. "We have great events planned every night and each one is a special event," Skinner explained. "No matter which night or nights you visit, you will see something special. That is what I like about short track racing."
Some of the big events planned for the 2011 season include the Art Pollard Memorial 50 for the Pro Stocks on May 28, Golden State King of the West Sprints on June 18, Firecracker 50 on July 2, ASCS 360 Sprint Tour on July 11, Western States DWARF Nationals on July 22-23, Lon Skinner Memorial on September 3-4, and Battle of the Border on September 23-24.
Southern Oregon Speedway is also proud to return as an ASA Member Track in 2011 as well. "Dennis Huth (ASA President) and I go a long ways back," Skinner said. "Anytime we can work together and help each other it is a good thing. Being a part of the ASA Member Track program gives us more attention on a national level which our competitors really appreciate. We are proud of our relationship with ASA."
"We are proud of our affiliation with Southern Oregon Speedway and excited they are part of our ASA Member Track program," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "The Medford area has a special meaning to me as I used to promote short track events at their old speedway. To have John Skinner's track part of our program means a lot and we are proud to have them as part of the ASA family."
