Jeff Hillock Scores First Career RMCS Victory
BOISE, IDAHO (May 31, 2011) Jeff Hillock of Cedar Hills, UT is no stranger to victory lane or winning championships, but it has been a long road for the wily veteran competing in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series. But that all changed Monday evening as Hillock scored his first career series triumph in front of an enthusiastic hometown crowd at Rocky Mountain Raceways located outside Salt Lake City,Utah.
Hillock clocked in second quick for the 125-lap feature event after local hotshoe Lynn Hardy topped the speed charts in qualifying with a quick lap of 14.948 seconds/90.313 mph around the quick 3/8-mile paved oval. James Eaton, subbing for championship contender Zan Sharp was third quick followed by Bruce Quale and Steve Jones.
Jeff Hillock finished second in his 12-lap heat boosting his point total for the evening. The heats were won by Jim Wulfenstein, Steve Jones, and John Newhouse.
Hillock started the 125-lap event from the back and used patience to get the front and control the pace of the race. Following Hillock to the finish line was 2010 series champion Steve Jones who picked up the victory at RMR earlier this month. Lynn Hardy finished third followed Bruce Quale and John Newhouse rounding out the top five finishers. Eric Rhead finished in sixth followed by Jim Wulfenstein, John Wong, Lonnie Lowder, and David Peterson.
The win catapults Hillock into the point lead with a 44-point advantage over new second place holder Steve Jones. Lynn Hardy moves up to third in the standings after three races with previous point leader Sharp dropping to fourth place. Eric Rhead rounds out the top five. Bruce Quale leads the second five just seven points out of fifth place followed by John Wong, Jim Wulfenstein, Lonnie Lowder, and John Newhouse rounding out the top ten in the standings.
The next event for the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series is Saturday, June 11 at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho. Zan Sharp picked up the victory at MVS back in April but his return to the drivers seat is tentative as he heals from injuries sustained in a recreational vehicle accident last week. John Dillon won last year's event while Dave Minegar is the track record holder.
The RMCS utilizes a racing format not found in ANY other regional touring series around the country. The top 20 qualifiers are inverted for every race putting fast time in the 20th starting position. This format ensures race fans see what they paid for and that is passing. Each driver is awarded three points per position gained in the event. Points are also awarded for qualifying and heat race finishes. Through the history of the series, the winning driver has averaged a 15th place starting position. To ensure competition, the RMCS pays it purse based on total point accumulation for the event and provides several special performance awards at each race.
The CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series is a regional touring series that allows all competitors to race and gain experience on different types of racetracks. It is a high-quality professional racing series that offers maximum opportunity at an affordable price serving the intermountain West. Jones Rolling into RMR Memorial Day Event
Zan Sharp of Wellsville, UT is leading the point standings on the strength of one win and a seventh place performance at RMR earlier this month, but his status for tonight's event is questionable. Sharp was injured in a recreational off-road accident last week sustaining several broken ribs and other injuries. Sharp will make a race time decision.
Holding down second place in the point standings is Parma, Idaho's John Wong. Wong has two top five finishes this season and is looking for his first series win. That win could come tonight in his Thompson Motorsports built and prepared Champion Farms Chevrolet.
2010 A-1 Heating and Air Conditioning Rookie-of-the-Year winner Eric Rhead of West Jordan, UT is currently third in the point standings and with two wins at RMR last season, he is a threat to win tonight.
Jeff Hillock is making his first full-time run in the RMCS this season though he has several years of experience and championships behind the wheel of Late Model type cars. Hillock is a veteran at RMR and has been among the fastest competitors so far this season.
Hillock holds down the fourth spot in the standings on the strength of one top five and two top ten performances. He is seeking his first career series win.
Defending series champion Steve Jones of Boise, Idaho is currently fifth in the point standings. He was sidelined in the opening round with a broken distributor but came roaring back and collected the victory in round two three weeks ago at RMR. Jones has won three of the last five series races staged at RMR.
Jim Wulfenstein, Bruce Quale, Lynn Hardy, John Nesmith, and Lonnie Lowder round out the top ten in the standings.
James Eaton has four career wins at RMR in RMCS action followed by Sharp and Jones with three wins each. Eric Rhead, John Dillon, Lynn Hardy, and Dave Minegar all have two wins apiece with six drivers sharing one win each.
Brian Levant from Calgary Alberta, Canada is the track record holder at RMR with a quick lap of 14.906 seconds/90.568 mph set last May in this event. Racing action gets underway at 5pm with RMCS qualifying and a whole host of local racing action.
Fellow Canadian competitors Trevor and Wheeler Boys are expected to be at RMR tonight and are also expected to compete in the series the rest of the season. A full slate of local racing action is also on the schedule tonight. Log on to www.rmrracing.com for complete details.

Tiger Racing’s Paul Brown Takes His Second Win of the Season at Mosport
When asked about how the Lucas Oil/K&N Mustang Boss 302S was performing, Brown said, “Ford Racing has done such a good job with this new Boss Mustang program that it makes my job easy. The more I drive it, the more comfortable and the faster we keep getting.”
Adding further detail on the weekend, Brown said, “I would have to say that it was our ERP, custom valved, JRZ shock package that really helped us win this weekend. We spent the first two days of testing just working on the Turn 5 exit that leads onto the long back straight. By the time the race came, we had it down perfect. I could go to throttle much sooner than our competitiors and get a killer launch. I could take full advantage of the Pirelli slicks with no wheel spin and was gaining an instant car length or two. The long back straight is so important at Mosport. I knew that Turn was key since we didn’t have the ulitmate top speed on the straight and we’re still down on mph with the required intake restrictor in place.”
At the halfway point, Paul Brown has led the most laps in GTS, has put in the fastest race lap five out of six times, qualified on the front row six out of six times, has three poles, two wins, one second place and is leading the Championship. The team is looking forward to a bit of a break, but also plans on some testing, media events and then getting back into it at Mid-Ohio. Brown added, “With every issue or glitch, we get stronger and are all working toward the same goal. I think we have our competition worried and they know we are for real.”
We’re proud to be partnered with Lucas Oil, K&N Filters, G-Stream, ERP/JRZ, Eibach, Bassani Xhaust, Ford Racing, Baer Brakes, Pirelli Tires, Motive Gear, Tremec, Hawk, Kenny Brown Motorsports and getCondemned. A special thanks to Wellendorf Performance and Skyscraper Brewing Company.

ASA SANCTIONED SOUTHERN OREGON SPEEDWAY'S SEASON IS UNDERWAY
Kevin Ramsell/American Speed Association PR
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Tuesday, May 24, 2011) - If you asked John Skinner who has the most feature wins so far this season, he would say it was Mother Nature. But, the Promoter of Southern Oregon Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Medford, OR, is determined to have drivers win and not the weather.
Wet and muddy conditions in their pits were the reason for the delay to the start of their 2011 season. But the green flag finally waved on Saturday, May 7 and will now continue all the way to September 24.
"This is not the way to start the season, but if this is the only time we had to cancel, best to get it out of the way now," Skinner said. "I was ready for some racing just like our competitors and fans. It felt great to open the gates for both, everyone was hungry for some great short track dirt racing."
Fans were treated to some great racing on opening night. Jeremy Richey picked up $1,000 for the Modified A-Main win. Vern Wheeler won in the Sprints with Duane Orsburn in the Street Stocks. Parker Jones won in the Super 4's.
While Skinner is excited to get the season opener completed, he is looking forward to an exciting 2011 season schedule. As an avid cyclist, Skinner knows that each stage, or event, has a special meaning towards the overall season success. "We have great events planned every night and each one is a special event," Skinner explained. "No matter which night or nights you visit, you will see something special. That is what I like about short track racing."
Some of the big events planned for the 2011 season include the Art Pollard Memorial 50 for the Pro Stocks on May 28, Golden State King of the West Sprints on June 18, Firecracker 50 on July 2, ASCS 360 Sprint Tour on July 11, Western States DWARF Nationals on July 22-23, Lon Skinner Memorial on September 3-4, and Battle of the Border on September 23-24.
Southern Oregon Speedway is also proud to return as an ASA Member Track in 2011 as well. "Dennis Huth (ASA President) and I go a long ways back," Skinner said. "Anytime we can work together and help each other it is a good thing. Being a part of the ASA Member Track program gives us more attention on a national level which our competitors really appreciate. We are proud of our relationship with ASA."
"We are proud of our affiliation with Southern Oregon Speedway and excited they are part of our ASA Member Track program," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "The Medford area has a special meaning to me as I used to promote short track events at their old speedway. To have John Skinner's track part of our program means a lot and we are proud to have them as part of the ASA family."
Southern Oregon Speedway races on Saturday nights, and more information can be found at www.sospeedway.com.

Idaho Competitor Dealt First DNF in Tough Weekend Combination Event
TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (May 24, 2011) Jonathon Gomez, driver of the Heritage Cattle Co./Century Boatland Chevrolet, left Iowa wondering what could have been. After the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East/West combination race at Iowa Speedway this past weekend, he had a damaged race car, a drop in the points, and some doubts and questions.
Racing is a sport where everything matters and the smallest detail make make a huge difference. Gomez and his Heritage Motor Sports entered the 175-lap race with plenty of optimism but never really found the speed they were looking for. Qualifying 27th in the 40-car field meant Gomez would have to negotiate a lot of traffic is he hoped to get to the front.
And while he managed to move inside the top twenty and close on the top ten, his car was too loose for track conditions making it a handful to drive. The team pitted a couple of times and made adjustments but were unable to find the right setup. "I think I nearly crashed fifty times," Gomez said. "51 didn't work out too well for me"
On lap 145, thirty laps from the end, his car slid up the track in turn two and made contact with the wall ending his day on the hook.
"I am not really sure what happened but the result was not good," Gomez continued. "At this point I am just focused on Vegas and doing well there. We have run really good there in the Tour car and hope that equals success in the West."
Gomez will have a lot to keep busy with and keep his mind off racing. The weather has warmed in Idaho and his family farming operation in full swing working seven days a week preparing and planting fields. He also has a growing trucking operation in North Dakota that demands a lot of his time.
"You take the good with the bad in racing," Gomez offered. "It was a tough weekend for the team but we will be back real strong at Vegas and hopefully we can make up the ground we lost in the points."
The Heritage Motor Sports team and driver jonathon Gomez will be back in action Saturday, June 11 at the Bullring at Las Vegas (NV) Motor Speedway for round five of the 14-race championship series. The race will be the first race at the Bullring for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series since 2003.
Gomez is currently tied for sixth in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West championship standings after four races this season just nine-points out of fifth place and 171-points out of the point lead. Gomez has started 24 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races scoring five top five and eleven top ten finishes.
Jonathon Gomez is supported by Heritage Cattle Company, Century Boatland, J&C Custom Harvesting, United Oil, Modern Machinery, DJ Safety, and Gomez Farms. Jonathon Gomez is the 2010 SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Champion. Gomez is also a winner on the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series and in the Mustang Challenge Series at Miller Motorsports Park. For more information on Jonathon Gomez, please log onto his website at http://jonathongomez.com or NASCAR Hometracks.
Mission Accomplished for Thompson at Iowa
A disappointing qualifying effort had Thompson back in the 26th position of the 40-car field to start the 175-lap contest on the 7/8-mile high speed oval. While qualifying on the speedways is typically about bragging rights, Thompson knew he had a car that would race well.
In a race that was slowed seven times for a total of 43-laps, Thompson used the early part of the race to let things sort out and advance his position as the situation allowed. By lap 20, he had moved up to the 18th position running lap times on par with the leaders.
At the lap 50 mark, Thompson had moved into the tenth position as the car was starting to hook up. After stopping mid-way through he race for tires and fuel, Thompson battled back inside the top ten ten and never lost sight of the leaders the rest of the race.
Over the closing laps he dueled with Ryan Gifford and Coleman Pressley from the East series with Gifford getting the sixth position with three laps to go. Thompson crossed the finish line in the seventh position to record his fourth top ten finish at Iowa.
"This season is about big picture racing and we need to finish strong at each race," Thompson said. "This is a great finish for us at Iowa and being third among the West is exactly what we need. I have always loved racing at Iowa as it is a fun track to drive and suits my driving style. We had a great car and it worked out pretty well to get us back in the points."
Thompson has started six races at Iowa (five East/West combination races and one West stand alone event) scoring two top five and four top ten finishes with his best qualifying effort of second back in September of 2009. Thompson has completed 987 of 1101 laps and has been running at the conclusion in five of his six starts at Iowa
In his NASCAR K&N Pro Series career, Thompson has started 103 NKNPS races since 2000 scoring one win, one Coors Light Pole Award, 22 top five and 59 top ten performances. His best points finish was fifth in 2009. Brett Thompson is currently tied with fellow Idahoan Jonathon Gomez for sixth in the 2011 standings after four races just nine points out of fifth place.
The next event for Thompson Motorsports and driver Brett Thompson is Saturday, June 11 at the Bullring in Las Vegas, NV. It will mark the series' return after an eight year hiatus. In three previous series events at the Bullring there have been three different winners.
Thompson Motorsports is also fielding a car for John Wong in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series where Wong is currently second in the point standings with two top five finishes in the first two races this season. Thompson Motorsports and John Wong will be in action on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at Rocky Mountain Raceways outside SLC, UT.

Karters go 3-wide during Round 2 of Stars of PGP Kart Series
KENT, Wash. — (May 23, 2011) The second round of the Stars of PGP Karting Series started on a damp track and threatening skies, but ended with dry conditions and more of the same exciting three-wide racing seen in the opening round. Maurice Shawver, Doug Taylor, Cameron Grimes-Hess and Brandon Scheiber were among the winners on Saturday, May 21.
Saturday marked the first time the series raced in the reverse direction this season, and with some drivers preferring the change several new faces made appearances at the front. With Honda Performance Development coming on board to back the Stock Moto category, that class had a renewed focus as the top three in the championship will receive contingency awards.
Round 2 also saw the return of live event coverage via eventbuilder.com, with full commentary, new ambient sounds allowing viewers to hear the action on the track, and a new “just click and play” interface to make watching all the action easier than ever. The event is available for on-demand viewing by following the link on PGP’s website.
Unlike the long wait between Rounds 1 and 2, drivers have only two weeks to wait before the next round of the Stars of PGP Karting Series takes place on Saturday, June 4. This upcoming weekend, many of PGP’s racers will be heading down for the opening round of the I-5 Corridor Series at Pat’s Acres in Canby, Ore., and everyone at PGP will be rooting for those drivers making the trek south.

During the qualifying session, the provisional pole flipped from driver to driver as the tricky slick conditions kept the field on their toes. In the end Maurice Shawver cut a blinder late in the going to earn the top spot with Round 1 pole sitter Shawn Tracy recording the second fastest time and point leader Cameron Grimes-Hess struggling a bit and finishing sixth.
Grimes-Hess recovered nicely to win the Heat race after stealing the lead from Shawver in the closing laps. Shawver pulled out to a huge lead at the drop of the green flag and looked to have the race all but won while the rest of the field battled behind him. Grimes-Hess worked his way through the field to challenge Javier Cantu for the second position while Jerry Peterson and Tracy fought for fourth behind them. With just a couple laps remaining Shawver rotated too far in turn 5 and his pursuers took advantage of the miscue. Hess and Cantu split around the stationary driver, with Hess holding the point position to take the checkered flag. He was followed by Shawver, who recovered to take second over Cantu.
The final would be arguably the most exciting race of the day, with drivers fighting tooth and nail for positions from beginning to end. Shawver pulled out a comfortable two-second lead en route to the victory while Grimes-Hess had to battle through the field to take second and Tracy made the move of the day on his way to third.
Right from the get-go Grimes-Hess and Shawver dueled for the lead but Grimes-Hess ran out of track and went off in the first turn. That put him in the middle of the pack but he clawed his way back toward the front as the laps wound down.
Tracy made one of the most exciting moves of the day, going three-wide to make a pass entering turn 1, making it stick and then continuing on two-wide through the Roller Coaster complex. Later while coming on to the main straight heading to the checkered flag, Tracy and Peterson were locked in a drag race for the for the final step on the podium, with Tracy taking the honor by .024 seconds.
Rotax Masters
Qualifying in Rotax Master resulted in a new face at the front of the field, with Kevin Mejia scoring his first pole position while Round 1 winner Doug Taylor clocked the second fastest lap after struggling with some mechanical gremlins.
Mejia led the way in the heat race but while trying to hold off a challenge from Taylor he lost the top spot to Jerry Peterson, who came from third to pass both drivers going through the Lightbulb corner. Taylor eventually made it around Mejia but he was docked one spot for contact during the race, making it Peterson, Mejia, and Taylor the top three at the checkers.
Taylor was a man on a mission in the feature race, working his way forward and eventually past Peterson en route to the victory. Both drivers appeared to be fighting engine issues, but Taylor and Peterson were able to repeat their 1-2 result from the opening round. Mejia fell behind both Taylor and Peterson but was able to hold off a challenge from Todd O’Neal to take the third step of the podium.
Rotax Senior
The drama in Rotax Senior started during qualifying, with Thor Hatton scoring his first pole position by just over a quarter second. Jeffrey Dyer and his crew went for a last-second gamble by switching to slicks while the rest of the field was on rain tires. The gamble didn’t look good at first when Dyer spun off in the first corner, but he steadily improved during the session and was able to post the third-fastest time. Unfortunately his dry tires and wheels were lighter than his rains and Dyer crossed the scale one pound light, negating his efforts.
The entire field switched to slicks for the heat race, but finding enough grip was a challenge for pole-sitter Hatton as the teenager struggled to keep the back end of the kart beneath him. First Grimes-Hess and then Travis Henson got around him, dropping Hatton to third and under pressure from Dyer. The two went back-and-forth a few times before the end but Hatton was able to hold on for third behind Grimes-Hess and Henson in first and second respectively.
The feature picked up where the heat ended, with Grimes-Hess and Henson pulling away from the rest of the pack and cruising to the finish. Behind them it was more of the same as Hatton and Dyer battled for third. Once again it looked like Hatton struggled for grip, and once again the two drivers swapped positions back and forth. After recovering from an off down the main straight Dyer fought back to make the pass for third through turn 6 only to have his chain break, ending an up-and-down day for the driver. At the checkers it was Grimes-Hess, Henson, and Hatton.
HPD Stock Moto Light
With the track drying all shifter drivers elected to go out for qualifying on slicks, making for a treacherous first few laps. By the end of the sessions everyone was chasing a new face at the front, Derek Hanson, who held the top spot over teammate Sean Naslund to make it a Birel front row.
At the start of the heat race Naslund leapt into the lead with a holeshot while Hanson slipped to third behind Steve Perdue, who had a stellar start from the fourth spot. Perdue’s strong start was short-lived, however, as he was forced to enter the pits with mechanical issues. Late in the going Naslund, Brandon Scheiber and Hanson were all running near identical lap times, and they finished that way.
In the final fortunes changed at the front, with Naslund bogging down at the start allowing Scheiber to take the lead entering turn 1. Naslund battled back and cut the fastest lap of the race while closing the gap to Scheiber, he would have to settle for second place as the teenager held on for the victory.
Behind the leaders, Hanson started third while Perdue was collected in a turn 2 mishap involving NWRK Hammer Nutritional teammates Jerott Cangie and Briank Frank that ended the day for both. Perdue would eventually catch and pass Hanson to take the third step of the podium after Hanson pulled off the track when his motor let go.

Series Veteran Seeks Big Weekend in East/West Combination Event
JEROME, IDAHO (May 20, 2011) Brett Thompson, driver of the RTTI/Jerome Truck Service Inc. Chevrolet, has been looking forward to his return to Iowa Speedway this weekend since last season knowing the track may owe him a little something. With a committed effort in place for a championship run, a strong finish at Iowa is critical as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West teams meet for the fifth time.
Thompson has started five races at Iowa (four East/West combination races and one West stand alone event) scoring one top five and three top ten finishes with his best qualifying effort of second back in September of 2009. Last season a broken panhard bar bracket doomed his race before it ever began.
Following qualifying for last year's race, the Thompson Motorsports team discovered the damaged bracket but were unable to repair it before the start of the race as NASCAR would have penalized the team five laps. So Thompson opted to take it easy at the start of the race and pit during the first caution. The team repaired the bracket but ended up losing six laps in the process.
After a solid start to the 2011 season, Thompson is optimistic about his chances this weekend. "We have always been pretty good at Iowa," Thompson said. "I really love the track and wish we could race here a few more times a year. While qualifying is definitely important, being fast late in the race is critical."
With this year's race being shortened to 175-laps from the customary 200-lap distance, there will be more pressure on the teams to perform flawless pit stops and for the driver to stay up on the wheel. "This track is really fast and there is a lot of side load on the tires in the corners," Thompson offered. "We have seen some hard crashes here and keeping the right side tires under you is going to be crucial."
Thompson is using the same car he ran to a fifth place finish with at Phoenix earlier this year and essentially will use the same setup. "We'll change the spring and shock package to handle the corner speed but we are pretty excited about the race," Thompson offered. "The team has been practicing pit stops for three weeks and Charlie (Wilson-crew chief) has a lot of confidence in the guys and the car."
Thompson is equally confident about his chances this weekend and knows the Iowa track fits his style. "I do like the speedways and Iowa is one of the best in the country," Thompson said. "I know the fans will see a great race as the field of cars in both series is closer than they have ever been. We have put a lot of effort into our program this year and we have a car that can certainly win. I feel I am a better and more confident driver and I hope we can get to victory lane on Saturday."
Thompson has completed 812 of 926 laps and has been running at the conclusion in four of his five starts at Iowa, and if not for a cut tire and the bracket issue from last season, he might have completed every lap. "With the race being in the evening this year, I think having a setup that is on the free side is going to make the difference," Thompson continued. "We know the track will tighten up, we just need to have the adjustment in the car."
Thompson has started 102 NKNPS races since 2000 scoring one win, one Coors Light Pole Award, 21 top five and 58 top ten performances. His best points finish was fifth in 2009. Brett Thompson is currently in seventh place in the championship standings after three races just 29-points out of fifth place.
Thompson Motorsports is a premier motorsports organization based in Jerome, Idaho providing complete race car preparation and fabrication supporting the local grassroots racer and experienced professional driver. Jonathon Gomez Determined; Seeks Breakout Performance at Iowa
A strong start to the 2011 campaign has Gomez excited about a return to Iowa. "It is by far my favorite track," Gomez said. "The facility is fantastic and the fans are great, but racing there is just awesome. We have always been fast at Iowa and we are bringing the same car that we finished second with at Phoenix earlier this year so I am confident we will do well."
The 7/8-mile wide and fast paved oval produces some great side-by-side racing as well demands the best from the team. This year's event has been shortened by 25-laps, making tire management a key element in the race.
"Iowa tightens up like no other track we race on," Gomez offered. "I think having a lot of adjustment in the car is going to be key so when we make the stop for fuel and tires, we have options. You carry so much speed into the corner that saving your tires will be the difference in the race."
Last season, Gomez finished eighth overall and second among his peers in the West tying his best career finish. "As much as I want to win, I also want to win the Coors Pole Award," Gomez continued. "There is a lot on the line at this race with all the guys from the East in the field, so winning here is a really big deal. Craig (Raudman, crew chief) and the team are ready and we have a car that can win. I can't wait."
Gomez is coming off a fourth place performance three weeks ago Miller Motorsports Park in Utah in which he survived a race that was extended 12-laps and a mid-race altercation that nearly ended his day in disappointment. "I think our run at Miller demonstrated that we have made the jump to the next level," Gomez offered. "I want to win in the worse way and feel we have a great shot to do it Saturday night at Iowa."
Gomez currently sits third in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West championship standings after three races this season just 54-points out of second place and 112-points out of the point lead. Gomez has started 23 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races scoring five top five and eleven top ten finishes. He has also been running at the conclusion of every race he has started completing 99.6% of all laps contested in his career.
Newcomers shine in Round 2 of PGP's Rental Kart League
KENT, Wash. — (May 17, 2011) This past weekend saw the second round of Rental Kart League Racing action at PGP Motorsports Park, with some of the best racing of the year taking place under beautiful blue skies.
With more than 20 drivers entering the second installment of the popular series on Sunday, May 15, there was action aplenty in both classes with Maurice Shawver taking his second win in the Expert category and Brett South winning in his maiden outing for the Novice class.
With two rounds now in the book, point battles in both classes have closed up as new drivers found the podium and other racers found renewed pace. With Round 3 slated for Saturday, May 28, the standings are sure to be shaken up even further.
Expert
Paul Zalud kicked things off in qualifying by earning his second pole in as many attempts while Mike Kinney cut the second fastest time just in front of shifter kart pilot Jim Lilleberg.
Once racing got under way there were a lot of position changes with the biggest mover being Stephen Greene, who charged from starting sixth on the grid to take his first heat race win of the season. After leading early Kinney held off Zalud for the second spot as the two continued their on-track battle from Round 1. Zalud was forced to miss Sunday’s final but will be one to watch if he returns for Round 3.
Although a non-factor during the heat race, Shawver returned to form during the final, working his way to the lead and eventual victory from mid-pack. Proving that this season’s Expert field is one of the toughest to date, Kinney was unable to follow up his heat result with another podium as other drivers made huge strides to the front.
Series newcomer Davin Sturdivant started the final in ninth but steadily charged to the front. Battling with Greene for second, Sturdivant was able to put the moves on the more experienced karter to steal away the spot and earn a podium in just his second start. Greene settled for third and some solid championship points, while Lilleberg, who started seventh, finished just off the podium in fourth.
With two feature wins under his belt reigning champion Shawver (245 points) looks to be the man to beat in the Expert class, but Round 2 tightened the field with Zalud (230) in second and Greene (220) and Kinney (220) tied for the third spot.
Novice
Designed for newcomers to kart racing at PGP, the Novice class produces some of the most exciting RKLR action as drivers of varying skill levels and experience come to grips with PGP’s state of the art track and each other. Round 2 was no exception as a driver new to the series dominated the event.
Brett South started his maiden PGP event in the best way possible, scoring the pole position in qualifying with the fastest lap. Bryan Hagmeyer was second quick for the second time and rounding out the top three in qualifying was Jeff Janders, who had also brought his two boys along to compete.
South and Hagmeyer dominated the field in the heat race but behind them some fierce fights for position ensued as series newcomer Benjamin Sharp moved into the third spot ahead of Jeff Janders, who cut the second fastest time of the race. Rounding out the top five in the heat race were David Lilienthal and youngster Stephen Szeliski, both making their first starts in the series.
When the green flag flew for the feature race, South led into the first corner once again, but this time Hagmeyer stayed close enough to keep the pressure on. South held on to complete his sweep of the day with Hagmeyer again the runner up.
Behind them contact in the first few laps resulted in both Sharp and Janders slipping backwards. Doing the opposite was Jennifer Triplett, who moved steadily forward after having an off in the heat race, and Brandon Zimmerman, who made a late-race charge to steal away the final podium spot from fellow teenager Szelinski. Lilienthal held off Triplett for fifth while Janders recovered to finish seventh.
The championship is up for grabs in this class, with South (260 points) and Round 1 winner Kyle Wiskirken, who was absent on Sunday, tied atop the standings. Hagmeyer (225) is in second and, with a pair of second place finishes, is still very much in the hunt.
RKLR Novice Class standings (after 2 of 7 rounds)
1. Kyle Wiskirken, Brett South 260; 3. Bryan Hagmeyer 225; 4. Mark Moynihan 215; 5. Travis Mosley, Brandon Zimmerman 190; 7. Stephen Szeliski 185; 8. David Lilienthal 180; 9. James Counihan 170; 10. Kylen Fowler, Jeff Janders 169; 12. Patrick Moynihan 167; 13. Jennifer Triplett 152; 14. Benjamin Sharp 150; 15. Kevin Janders 141; 16. Bruce Kember 123; 17. Jacob Janders 102.

ADD SOME VARIETY; STARS OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES STARTS ON WEDNESDAY
KENT, Wash. — (May 16, 2011) Variety is the spice of life. Some folks like just cheese on their pizza, others want the works (hold the anchovies, please). Same with ice cream sundaes (sprinkles, nuts and a cherry on top for me, if you don’t mind).
PGP Motorsports Parks gets it, so we came up with the Stars of Motorsports Series, giving our customers the chance to try as many or as few types of racing as they’d like in one event: cars, bikes, karts or scooters.
Stars of Motorsports events do not require previous race experience, either, so they’re a perfect opportunity for new racers to get on track to see what all the excitement is about.
The four-round Spring-Summer Stars of Motorsports Series opens this Wednesday, May 18 with five classes — Rental Karts, SuperMoto, DRZ/Scooters, Lap Attack and Competitive Karts. There will be no drifting classes for this event but the BBQ will be fired up so bring along whatever you like to grill and eat.
Practice begins at 5 p.m. and you can race in as many or a few classes as you like. Pre-registration is required as space is limited in the Rental Kart and Lap Attack classes. The registration form can be found at the “Racing@PGP>Competitive Kart Racing>Forms/Info/Rules” tab at www.PacificGP.com.
For both novice and expert Rental Kart racers, this is the perfect chance to get some extra track time in preparation for the next Rental Kart League Racing or Stars of PGP Kart Series events.
The Lap Attack class winner will be determined based on which driver turns the most consistent lap times, so everyone has a shot at climbing to the top step of the podium.
Stars of Motorsports events are held on Wednesdays with remaining Spring and Summer events scheduled for June 15, July 20 and the finale on August 31.
Try something new or just enjoy what you like the most. Either way PGP Motorsports Park has you covered with the Stars of Motorsports Series so you can race your car, kart and bike all on the same day on PGP’s state-of-the-art .82-mile asphalt track.

"Terrible" Tim Focusing On 2011
Tacoma, Washington –
5/11/11 – After a short season in 2010, "Terrible" Tim McDougald, driver of the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Cornwell Tools / Ringers Gloves Toyota Camry is focusing on the coming 2011 racing season and looking forward to a renewed excitement in the sport he loves.
"I'm pretty excited about this coming season!" said "Terrible" Tim. "We've put in a lot of effort to not only fix the car after last season, but to update it as well. I'm really excited about the work that's been done on it and I'm looking forward to getting it to the track and seeing the changes in the car."
After suffering some frame damage in a mid-season wreck, the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Cornwell Tools / Ringers Gloves Toyota Camry was sidelined for the remainder of the 2010 racing season. The team worked with Rick Hagar at RPM Sales & Service to make repairs to the chassis and decided to go a bit farther with it once they committed. "A huge thank you to Rick at RPM Sales & Service for helping us get the car fixed the right way," said "Terrible" Tim. "We knew we had some problems with the chassis last year, but there wasn't much that we could do in the thick of the racing schedule so we just dealt with it. I was pretty happy with my guys; they actually had it running pretty quick, all things considered. But that last crash we got tangled up in pretty much did it in, so we decided to make it the way we wanted it since we were going to be cutting it apart anyway."
A new front frame section was ordered from Lefthander and installed on the old Biffle chassis by RPM Sales & Service along with a couple other updates that the team wanted to try. "I just love the look of this new front clip, it's not even the same car any more." said an excited "Terrible" Tim. "Rick did a great job on this thing. I can't wait to get it to the track and see how it works. We've already found some things that are just much nicer than what we had, just in the way it all goes together. It's just a nice piece now."
After bouncing around from a couple different series' and tracks, "Terrible" Tim will now bring his #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Cornwell Tools / Ringers Gloves Toyota Camry to Evergreen Speedway for the 2011 racing season as he still searches for a place to call "home". "Since I got back in the driver's seat, I haven't really had a home," said Tim McDougald. "My home track was torn down while I took a break from racing, so when I came back I felt a bit like a drifter. I ran with the LLMRS, a little touring series that went all over Washington and in to Oregon. I liked it there and thought that was my home for almost 3 years, until that series shut down. Then I tried Southsound Speedway in Tenino, but never really felt like that was 'home', I just sort of felt like an outsider for what ever reason. I never could put my finger on it. Nice place, just not 'my place', you know? So I'm pretty excited to be heading to Evergreen this year. I'm looking to make a new home, find some new friends, have some fun. I don't expect to run with guys like Moriarity, Lang or Knight or anything like that. I've never been on that track, those guys live there. Hopefully I can stay out of their way, earn some respect, have some fun and make some friends. That's what I liked about the LLMRS, we were all friends, and it made it fun. That's what I'm looking for. But hey, I wouldn't pass up a trophy if I had a shot either."
After a dismal 2010 season, the small family run team is looking to find that spark they had just a short while back, and find that fun factor that reminds them why they participate in this sport. "Racing is tough," said "Terrible" Tim. "We've had some serious ups and downs. We were one of the top running teams in LLMRS, we put our mark on that series. But the last couple years we've really struggled for what ever reason. Setups keep advancing, technology keeps marching forward, it's tough to stay on top of all that. And expensive too. Last year was rough, we couldn't seem to catch a break, we kept wrecking the car or breaking it. I don't think I finished a single race. So we're really looking to put that behind us and have some fun this year. We're joining the season a little late so that will take us out of the points deal. But I'm ok with that. I wouldn't have been a factor anyway; I need to learn this track and all the changes we've made to the car. Then we'll get in there and mix it up."
Be sure to catch the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Cornwell Tools / Ringers Gloves Toyota Camry and the always enigmatic driver "Terrible" Tim McDougald as he joins the great group of drivers at Evergreen Speedway for the 2011 racing season. Tough Start Tough Decisions for 2010 SRL Champ Gomez
TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (May 10, 2011) Jonathon Gomez, driver of the Heritage Cattle Co./Century Boatland Chevrolet, is the defending champion in the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour and defending that championship was a driving factor to return to the series this season. After two races in which a crash and a blown engine has mired him deep in the point standings, he has changed his plans.
Watford, ND is a twelve hour drive from his home base of Twin Falls, Idaho but it is in Watford that Gomez has found a new challenge. While the rest of the country is struggling through the current economic downturn, including the family farming and dairy operation in Idaho, Gomez has set up shop in Watford hauling gravel for the oil boom in the area.
"After the first two races and the finishes we had, we thought we needed to change our focus," Gomez said. "I really wanted to defend the 2010 championship but it will be next to impossible where we are currently at in the points. Plus having to spend $40K on a new motor is not the right thing to do right now."
The right thing to do is focus on work and generating revenue. That is exactly what Gomez is doing. In the last month he has moved eight truck and trailer rigs up to North Dakota. He has a team of nine employees working 2-3 weeks on with a week home on two rotations.
"There is a lot of opportunity up there right now," Gomez said. "It is good money and I am told we have at minimum five years of work hauling gravel preparing the roads in the oil fields. We would eventually like to start hauling oil but gravel gets our foot in the door."
With an estimated 200-year oil supply in ground, the opportunity may be limitless. While Gomez continues to grow the North Dakota operation, he is currently back in Idaho preparing the fields for the spring planting season. "Farming is tough right now but we have so much invested we have to keep at it," Gomez offered. "
Dropping the SRL from his racing plans was a tough decision, but one that he is comfortable with. "I love the SRL," Gomez said. "They have some of the best drivers around and I have enjoyed every race competing with Jim (Pettit), M.K. (Kanke), Derek (Thorn) and the rest of the guys. We decided to concentrate on just the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and chase that title. After a long discussion with my SRL car owner (Bob Strandwold) we came to the same conclusion. He fully supports our decision."
Gomez currently sits third in the K&N standings and knows he has a lot left to accomplish in the series. "We have been pretty good but we still want that first win. We believe that we can contend for wins and the championship this year and we are going to give it everything we have to do so. Cutting back on the SRL deal will really helps us focus."
The next race for Gomez is Saturday, May 21 at Iowa Speedway in the annual combination East/West Shootout for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. Gomez finished 8th overall last year and second among the competitors from the West. "I really like Iowa," Gomez said. "It is just an awesome track and we are bringing the same car that we finished second with at Phoenix."
His first NASCAR win could be right around the corner but Gomez has already been a proven winner both on and off the track.
Jonathon Gomez is supported by Heritage Cattle Company, Century Boatland, J&C Custom Harvesting, United Oil, Modern Machinery, DJ Safety, and Gomez Farms. Jonathon Gomez is the 2010 SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Champion and is also a winner on the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series as well as in the Mustang Challenge Series at Miller Motorsports Park. Defending RMCS Champion Jones Back in Championship Form
BOISE, IDAHO (May 10, 2011) For defending CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series champion Steve Jones of Boise, ID, it was a night of three's. He was third quick in practice. He qualified in the third position for the 75-lap feature, and he finished in third in his heat race. During the main event he was running in the third position with ten laps to go so he figured it was going to be a good night. It turned out to be a great night when the leaders tangled late in the race and he inherited the lead cruising to his third career RMCS victory Saturday night at Rocky Mountain Raceways located outside Salt Lake City, Utah.
Zan Sharp of Wellsville, UT led all qualifiers and collected his ninth career Sharp Powder Coating Fast Time Award with a quick lap of 15.221 seconds/88.693 mph around the fast 3/8-mile paved oval. John Wong in the Thompson Motorsports built and prepared Champion Farms Chevrolet clocked in second quick followed by Jones, Jim Wulfenstein, and Jeff Hillock.
Thane Alderman led the first seven laps before local hero Lynn Hardy took the point and dominated the race. While Hardy looked to run away with the race, Sharp had other ideas. Mainly, score a second victory in as many races. Sharp, who started at the tail of the field, closed on Hardy on lap 50 and the duo waged a spirited battle for a dozen laps.
On lap 64, both Hardy and Sharp tried to occupy the same piece of real estate and both wound up spinning handing the lead over to Jones who had a birds eye view of the action. With Hardy and Sharp restarting at the tail of the field with ten laps to go, all Jones had to do was hold off Jeff Hillock for the win.
The win marked Jones' return to victory lane at RMR where he won on two occasions last season. ""It feels great to win," Jones said. "Our car is still not the way I want it but we are getting a whole lot closer. I was ready to settle for third but to win you have to be in position and fortunately we were right there when it counted."
The win moves Jones up to fifth in the championship standings and while defending his title is on his mind, he knows there is a lot of racing left to do. "Zan (Sharp) is going to be tough," Jones offered. "He (Sharp) has got it together and they are bad fast. It is going to be a lot of fun all season but it sure feels great to get the win here at RMR."
For Sharp, it was a tough ending to a great day. Earlier in the evening his son Bo dominated the Intermountain Truck Series race to score the win in the 40-lap event putting Sharp in victory lane as an owner. Sharp and his wife Vivian also celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, easing the sting of his disappointment in the race.
Jeff Hillock crossed the finish line in second followed Eric Rhead, John Wong, and Jim Wulfenstein. Hardy rebounded to finish sixth followed by Sharp, John Nesmith, Justin Westmorland, and Lonnie Lowder rounding out the top ten finishers.
Sharp maintains his point lead after two races followed by John Wong 45 points back. Eric Rhead moves up to thrid with Hillock and Jones rounding out the top five. Eight points separate second through fifth in the standings.
The next race for the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge series is Monday, May 30 for the annual 100-lap Memorial Day event back Rocky Mountain Raceways.
Through the history of the series, the winning driver has averaged a 14th place starting position.
The motto of the series is to “Race Hard and Have Fun!” For all the latest news and information regarding the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series log on to our website at www.rmcsracing.com . Century Boatland is a major sponsor to the series.
LUX PERFORMANCE TO MANAGE DODGE CELEBRITY PROGRAM AGAIN IN 2011
ALOHA, OR, May 10, 2011 - For the second year, Lux Performance Group, LLC will manage the Celebrity/Guest Driver Program for Dodge and its Dodge Viper Cup. Lux Performance Group, owned by Cindi and Fred Lux of Aloha, OR, has been a Dodge "works" program since 2005 and was instrumental in the successful creation and execution of the Dodge Viper Cup Celebrity program in 2010. The Aloha, OR-based operation will prepare two Dodge Viper ACR-X for a pair of celebrity/guest drivers at each of the ten races which make the one-make series' 2011 schedule. The opening round for the duo of guest-driven Lux Performance Group Vipers is scheduled for May 14-15 at Sebring (FL) International Raceway.
The Dodge Viper Cup will be the second major Dodge-related activity for Cindi Lux and Lux Performance Group thus far in 2011. Lux was asked to join the litany of Dodge Motorsports-backed competitors at the Dodge Motorsports Athlete's Summit in early April. The multi-day event brought athletes from around Dodge-supported activities to Salt Lake City to compete in a made-for-TV event on the Miller Motorsports Park road course. While the results are a tightly held secret until the event's airing on Versus later this year, Cindi Lux featured prominently in the event which pitted Dodge drivers from NASCAR, the NHRA, off-road, motocross competition and more in identical Dodge Viper ACR-X. Lux Performance prepared two of the entries including the Vipers for Kurt Busch (NASCAR), Ivan Tedesco (Supercross) and Mark Hall (Monster Jam).

As it was in 2010, Lux Performance Group will be responsible for every aspect of the Celebrity Driver entries in the five-weekend Viper Cup series. Lux Performance will prepare the not-road-legal, race cars and transport the V10-powered machines to each track. Once on location, Cindi Lux, a Dodge and Mopar factory driver from 2005-2008, will coach the guest drivers on the ins-and-outs of competition while the Fred Lux-led crew will maintain the front-engined exotics throughout the race weekend.
In 2010, the first season of the Dodge-supported Viper Cup, Lux Performance Group shepherded through ten guest drivers including Dodge CEO Ralph Gilles, automotive journalists, Olympic and X-Game athletes as well as other professional race drivers from non-sports car disciplines of the sport. Through Lux Performance's superior car preparation and the hands-on guidance of 12-time road racing champion Cindi Lux, the pair of Lux-readied ACR-X won tworaces and finished with five podiums. The success of the Lux Performance entries earned nearly $50,000 for charity.
The Dodge Viper Cup will be featured on some of the most celebrated race courses in North America. After the 2011 debut at Sebring, Lux Performance Group will travel with the Series to New Jersey Motorsports Park (June 11-12), Virginia International Raceway (July 9-10) and Texas World Speedway (September 3-4). The Series will then return to Florida to close the season at the world famous Daytona International Speedway (October 22-23).
The complete 2011 Dodge Viper Cup season will be featured on Versus TV for a second season adding to the prestige of this unique, one-make championship. Please check local listings for broadcast times. News and features from the race weekends can be found at both www.CindiLux.com and www.ViperHeadquarters.com.

The Dodge Viper Cup will be but a small part of Cindi Lux's 2011 schedule. In June, the popular Northwest driver will return to Portland's annual Rose Cup race. The long-held event is deeply rooted in her family's history and Lux has campaigned the race 15 times in her career dating to 1989. Lux, who has more than 75 victories and over 150 podium-finishes on her resume, is also in conversation regarding several more opportunities to showcase her skill behind the wheel.

Cindi Lux
About the Dodge Viper Cup Celebrity Program: "Anytime we prep and race Dodge race cars, I am in heaven. They are so easy to race both on the pocketbook and from a maintenance standpoint it makes our job a lot easier. This celebrity program is so rewarding. It exposes new players to the Viper platform and I love to watch their eyes when they get out of it for the first time. Everyone is hooked whether it's a champion like Richie Hearn [IndyCar veteran] or a novice to the sport like Bucky Lasek [professional skateboarder]. That is probably the best part of doing this celebrity program for Dodge. We're starting to line up the drivers and conduct some training for the new season. I think we're going to have a great group this year. I know it will be an absolute blast out there for Lux Performance Group!"
About the Dodge Athlete's Summit: "Having the Dodge drivers from all forms of motorsports together was very hilarious to say the least. There are some distinguished members of the Dodge racing family and it was amazing to get to know some of them. Can't say how the race ended up but the fans certainly need to tune into Versus channel to see that battle on the race track. And of course, racing against 'The Captain', Mr. [Roger] Penske, was an honor I will undoubtedly treasure the rest of my life. The whole event was really unique and cool to be invited to participate in."
