Thompson has momentum on his side entering the Toyota/TTC "150" presented by Miller Lite scoring his best finish of the season (third place) last weekend at Colorado. The finish moved Thompson up to fifth place in the standings with just four races remaining on the 2011 schedule.
"We had a great car at Colorado and we are taking the same car to Montana," Thompson said. "We are really happy with the progress we have made this season and Charlie (Wilson) and the team have done a tremendous job preparing the cars all year long."
The trip to Montana will be Thompson's first but one that he is really excited about. "I have heard the fans are some of the best and the track is a lot of fun to drive," Thompson said. It took us a while but we have our short track program in order and we feel really good about our chances this weekend."
With most K&N Pro Series events, qualifying will be key. "Last week we qualified well and that propelled us for the race. We need to do the same thing this weekend and I know we will have a great finish."
Thompson is seeking his second series win and that win could well come tomorrow night. "It all comes down to qualifying and if we can start up front I am confident we can stay there."
One of the bigger challenges that Thompson faces this weekend is having never turned laps laps at MRP. "I think we can adjust pretty quickly to the track," Thompson offered. "This series is loaded with talent and everybody is after the same thing. We will know a lot after the first practice session but I am confident we will be among the top cars."
Experience is on Thompson's side this weekend as he in one of the most experienced drivers in the series and he will need to draw upon that experience in order to reach victory lane and 'Rumble in the Rockies'.
Through ten races this season, Thompson has averaged a finish of 10.5 while completing 95% of all laps contested and has been running at the conclusion at nine of the ten races. He currently holds down the fifth position in the point standings on the strength of three top five and five top ten performances. In his NASCAR K&N Pro Series career, Thompson has started 109 NKNPS races since 2000 scoring one win, one Coors Light Pole Award, 23 top five and 61 top ten performances. His best points finish was fifth in 2009.
