JEROME, IDAHO (August 10, 2011) Brett Thompson, driver of the RTTI/Jerome Truck Service Inc. Chevrolet, had one of his best short track performances of the year this past Saturday at Colorado National Speedway. Thompson scored his third top five finish of the season by finishing in the third position in the 150-lap NAPA/Toyota sponsored race at the fan-favorite 3/8-mile speedway.
Thompson qualified his RTTI Chevrolet in the seventh position where he started the race. CNS normally breeds three-wide racing and this event was no different. What was different is that the race only experienced two caution periods allowing Thompson to run the leaders the entire race and be in contention for the win late in the event.
Thompson's car was really good under green flag conditions and he simply maintained his position saving the tires for a run later in the race.
Thompson started to make his move at lap 100 moving into fifth then ducking under Luis Martinez JR for fourth place on lap 116. By lap 130, Thompson had caught series stalwart Greg Pursley and would challenge for the position over the final twenty laps.
At lap 145, Thomspon was able to get his nose under Pursley and looked to have the position as the duo crossed the start finish line but a caution came out when the two leaders tangled and spun. Alex Bowman was sent to the rear for aggressive driving while Dylan Kwasneiwski maintained the top spot.
The race finished under a green/white/checker erasing the momentum Thompson had but he scored his first top five finish in the second half of the season. The finish also vaulted Thompson up to fifth in the point standings with four races left on the schedule.
"It was a great run for the team and to come out of Colorado with a third place finish is fantastic," Thompson said. "You always want more and we feel we had a car that could contend. If not for that final caution, we had second place in our sights. This was an important race for our team. We have a lot of customers and employees here in the Denver area and it was great for all of them to be at the track and be part of this event."
Thompson has little time to celebrate the finish as the series moves north to Montana Raceway Park in Kalispell for the 150-lap Rumble in the Rockies this weekend. "I have been looking forward to Montana all season," Thompson said. "We will have the same car up there and we expect a similar result."
Through ten races this season, Thompson has averaged a finish of 10.5 while completing 95% of all laps contested and has been running at the conclusion at nine of the ten races. He currently holds down the fifth position in the point standings on the strength of three top five and five top ten performances. In his NASCAR K&N Pro Series career, Thompson has started 109 NKNPS races since 2000 scoring one win, one Coors Light Pole Award, 23 top five and 61 top ten performances. His best points finish was fifth in 2009.
