Thompson qualified his brand new Thompson Motorsports built Chevrolet in the tenth position after struggling to find the right set up that would work on the new chassis and the challenging 3/8-mile layout at All American. His tenth place starting position would mean he would start the 150-lap race on the outside row on a track where passing is a premium and the inside line is the preferred groove.
During the early laps Thompson was set to just ride and let the race sort itself out. After a caution at lap 25, the field bunched back up for the double file restart and that close quarters racing started to produce fireworks. Unfortunately, Thompson was tagged from behind after several cars directly behind him got together and made contact with the the left rear of Thompson's Chevrolet. The result was a spin and a new starting position at the back of the field.
Thompson spent the next 40 laps fighting to stay on the lead lap but was overtaken by the race leader on lap 70. A caution a few laps later erased the one lap deficit and Thompson was back on the lead lap in 12th place.
Over the second half of the race, Thompson worked his way into the top ten within sight of the leaders when the final caution flew on lap 135. The final 15 laps saw the lead change hands four times and Thompson moved up to the 8th position when the checkered flag dropped.
"It was not the kind of night we wanted but we were able to stay out of the mess late in the race and finish in the top ten," Thompson said. "We had a better car than our finish indicated but we had to use up the tires getting back through the field after that early incident. The team did an awesome job and we are doing what we need to in order to stay in the championship hunt."
The Toyota/NAPA AutoCare 150 from All American Speedway will air on SPEED Thursday, May 5 at 6 p.m. ET. The next event for Brett Thompson in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West is April 30, the first of three road-course events of the year, in the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
While Greg Pursley continues to lead the championship standings with 365 points, Brett Thompson moved into third place just 20-points out of second and 68-points out of first place.
