TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (April 3, 2011) Jonathon Gomez of Twin Falls, Idaho was disappointed with his 2011 SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour debut last night at The Bullring at Las Vegas (NV) Motor Speedway in the SPEARS Manufacturing "111". Gomez qualified second but started tenth after the invert of the top qualifiers and had worked his way up to as high as second before on-track mayhem ran its course.
Gomez used the early laps to let his tires come in and by lap ten he had moved up to the eighth position. By lap 18 he moved into seventh with his eyes on the leaders.
Tight racing action meant patience was the key skill on a night where everyone wanted to impress in the opening round of the ten race championship series. Gomez waited for his openings and on lap 26 he dove to the inside passing three cars to move into the fourth spot.
Gomez next moved into third on lap 30 and into second ten laps later. The red flag came out on the track on lap 63 stopping the action. Gomez was penalized for having work performed on the car under red and restarted 14th. Something was amiss on the Century Boatland Chevrolet and he never regained the speed he had earlier in the race eventually retiring on lap 97 with a 19th place finish.
Gomez drives a Chevrolet owned by Bob Strandwold in the SRL Southwest Tour with Ron Copeland as his crew chief and is supported on the crew by Craig Raudman, Dave Reed, Derek Copeland, Adam Wyse, and Ty Henson. Gomez is the 2010 defending SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour champion.
Jonathon Gomez is in his fifth year of competitive racing having won local track titles at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls and competed in various Late Model events the past several seasons. Gomez has started twelve SRL Southwest Tour Races and has two wins, nine top-10 and eight top-5 finishes along with two fast time awards. He has also started 21 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races since 2008 scoring ten top ten finishes and finished sixth last season in the final standings. He is already touted as a NASCAR West title contender after finishes of second (Phoenix) and third (All-Star Showdown) in two races this season.
The next event for Gomez and his Heritage Motorsports crew will be Saturday, April 16 at All American Speedway in Roseville, CA for the NASCAR/SRL double header.
Jonathon Gomez is supported by Heritage Cattle Company, Century Boatland, J&C Custom Harvesting, United Oil, Modern Machinery, DJ Safety, and Gomez Farms.
