Tyler Redin wins Youth Hornets feature

EPHRATA, Wash. (Aug. 8, 2010) -- Although Andy Alberding looked to be the top dog Saturday night at Ephrata Raceway Park it was Matt Hein capturing the win and extending his NSRA point lead by winning the Rebel Jackson Memorial Race. One of the signature races for the NSRA crew and Ephrata Raceway Park Hein saw a huge crowd witness a record setting night. Also racing were the Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornets and the Jerry’s Auto Supply BIG CARS. The North American Big Rigs put on a 10-lap exhibition as a preview of their upcoming race August 14th as well as a burnout smoke show.
Starting off the evening in qualifying Alberding blistered the track with a 12.192 lap around the quarter mile high-banked asphalt shattering the former track record set back in 2003 by Craig Deaver of 12.390. Alberdings lap was almost half a second faster than the second place qualifier. The two Trophy Dashes were won by Chris Schmelzle of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and Craig Deaver from Sumner, Washington. In the three Heat Races Deaver, Hein and Drew Church were the winners.
Twenty-two cars started the scheduled 50-lap Main Event with Ralph Deaver and Todd Coleman on the front row. Deaver lead the first 13 laps with just one yellow flag slowing the high flying action. On lap 11 Cory Lockwood tangled with Adam Smith, and Sierra Jackson came to a complete stop to keep from being involved. Lockwood and Jackson were able to continue but were sent to the back of the field, Smith was done for the night. Randy Dubois was charging from his fifth starting position to challenge Deaver for the lead which he would grab on the 14th lap bringing Hein with him through the field. DuBois held the top spot for two laps before Hein moved to the point on lap 16 with a big pass on the bottom of the track coming out of turn two as DuBois was held up by lapped traffic.
With Hein comfortably out front and pulling away from the field all eyes went to 19th starting Alberding who had worked his way to the fourth spot by lap 19. The second yellow flag of the race came out on lap 26 when Sierra Jackson tapped Todd Coleman coming out of turn two sending Coleman the rest of the way into a spin. Coleman got loose coming off the corner and Jackson with nowhere to go made contact. Jackson had been charging back through the field, and the 2008 race winner just ran out of room. The yellow closed the gap between the leader and the rest of the field as Hein was more than a straightaway in front of the second and third place battle.
By lap 31, Alberding had moved to second and was again a half straightaway behind Hein with clear sailing between himself and the leader. Alberding closed to within a few car lengths when a lap 36 yellow flag for local point leader Mike Fought came out. Fought wound up in the tire barrier at the end of the first turn gravel ending his evening with a clear top ten finish in sight. On the restart, Hein surprisingly pulled away from Alberding and held on for the finals laps to win the 2010 Rebel Jackson Memorial Race at Ephrata Raceway Park. Alberding was second and DuBois held off fast closing Craig Deaver for 3rd.
In Winners Circle, Hein said the race was good for team. “We haven’t won one for awhile so this feels good. In front of this great crowd, this was a good win for us!” Alberding told the crowd that he “ just ran out of tires and had nothing for Matt on that last run.”
The Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornet Main Event was won by Tyler Redin who held off fast time Colton Fisher (17.717) for his second consecutive victory. Fisher and Kelly Olsick won the Trophy Dashes with Redin winning the Heat Race.
Once again the Jerry’s Auto Supply BIG CARS held the crowds attention with a Boat Race with a Twist. There were two Main Event winners as Troy Lannoye knocked the boat off the trailer being towed by the ERP Jammer Motorhome and Lee Love crossed the finish line first as time ran out. Chris McCart set fast time with a 17.091 lap and won his Trophy Dash. John Blackburn was the other Trophy Dash winner. Lannoye won the Heat Race.
Saturday night August 14th the Big Rigs, racing Semi-Trucks will be in action along with the Super Stocks, Pepsi Cola Street Stocks, 7-UP 360 Sprints and the Schaeffer’s Oil Mini Stocks. Gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 7pm. For more details www.EphrataRacewayPark.com .
