RMCS Opens at Magic Valley This Weekend

BOISE, ID (May 2, 2013)- The CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series will open up its tenth season of competition this weekend at the Magic Valley Speedway located outside Twin Falls, Idaho. The race will be the first of five events on three race weekends for the popular Late Model touring series at MVS this season.

Bruce Quale of Twin Falls, Idaho is set to defend his 2012 series championship against long-time rival and 2011 champion Steve Jones and a host of other competitors who eye the top prize. Quale notes that repeating as champion may be more difficult then winning the first. "All eyes are on you every race," Quale said. "But at the same time a lot of the pressure is off. We have high expectations for the season but so does everyone else."

One of those drivers who is solely focused on the championship is Meridian Speedway icon and multi-time champion John Nesmith. Nesmith plans to attack the 2013 schedule with everything he has in pursuit of the series championship. He recently purchased a brand-new car for his title run and will team with and mentor up-and-coming racer Dennis Brodigan. "I had a lot fun racing last year and I still have the desire to race and win," Nesmith said. "When I retire from racing I do not want any regrets, so we are focused on winning races and the championship this season. I have always loved racing at Magic Valley; its a track that is technical and fun to drive."

16-yr old Hannah Newhouse joins the RMCS in the TMS #61 entry.
Making the move up to the RMCS this season is local fan favorite Hannah Newhouse. The 16-year old will contest the full schedule this season in hopes of claiming the A-1 Heating and Air Conditioning rookie title driving the familiar blue #61 Thompson Motorsports entry.

Returning the the series full-time in 2013 is James Wulfenstein out of Nevada. "Wulfy" as he is affectionately called is a former two-time champion at The Bullring and has started 27 career RMCS races.

Also making the long-tow this season is Bobby Hirschbock out of Northern California who will also battle for rookie-of-the-year honors driving for Tom Gable in the #15 Tire Factory car.

Other drivers expected on Saturday night include multi-time series winner Jonathon Gomez from Buhl, Tyler Bailey (2012 Rookie-of-the-Year), Trevor Cristiani, local driver Morgan Rasmussen, and Joe Miller out of Utah.

Returning to the series as a sponsor in 2013 is Thompson Motorsports. The local race shop supplies parts, fabrication, and technology to racers at all levels and will award $200 per race to a competitor who claims the Fast Time Award and goes on to win the race. Other sponsors returning this season offering special awards include CarbonX, Sharp Powder Coating, Century Motorsports & Marine, Longacre Racing Products, and A-1 Heating & Air Conditioning.

MVS has hosted 33 series events since 2004 with former racer Bobby Latham scoring four victories, Jonathon Gomez claiming three wins and 14 other drivers scoring at least one win each. Two-time champion Dave Minegar is the track record holder with a quick lap of 14.216 seconds/84.238 mph around the tricky 1/3-mile paved oval.

The RMCS utilizes a racing format not found in ANY other regional touring series around the country. The RMCS inverts up to the top 20 from qualifying putting the fast qualifiers at the back to start each race. This format ensures race fans see what they paid for and that is passing. Each driver is awarded three points per position gained in the event. Points are also awarded for qualifying and heat race finishes. Through the history of the series, the winning driver has averaged a 15th place starting position. To ensure competition, the RMCS pays it purse based on total point accumulation for the event and provides several special performance awards at each race.

The series is supported by a great family of sponsors including: CarbonX, Century Boatland/Century Motorsports, Project Filter, ESI, A-1 Heating & Air Conditioning, Sharp Powder Coating, Five Star Racing Bodies, Hoosier Racing Tires, Thompson Motorsports, Frank's Radios, Longacre Racing Products, Performance Solutions, Kidd's Performance and Dyno, Joes Racing Products, PPG Paint, Circle Racing Wheels, DJS Sports Marketing, and Mike Minegar's Auto Body.
