Rough Night Closes Out Season For HWR

Tacoma, Washington –

9-17-2012 – Saturday, September 15th saw the 2012 racing season at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe come to a close for the Super Late Model division. HayWire Racing suffered through a very rough night to close out their season as the #92 Mo-Dane Trucking / RPM Sales & Service / Vital Signs Chevrolet Impala and driver Tommy Rasmussen were involved in a massive crash that ended in an even bigger fire.
With fire being any racers worst nightmare, Tommy Rasmussen found himself confronted with it rather up close and personal in the first Main Event of a Twin-50 night on the big 5/8ths mile oval at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. Rasmussen was running mid pack simply making laps and looking for a checkered flag on what would have been a decent run that would keep him in that 10th place points spot as the season drew to a close when out of nowhere a lapped car spun in turn 1 and Rasmussen and his #92 Mo-Dane Trucking / RPM Sales & Service / Vital Signs Chevrolet Impala had nowhere to go, hitting the spinning car very hard.
The impact proved to be at just the right angle and location to knock the fuel pump off the spinning car and cause a very large fire to engulf the damaged racecar. In a true testament to the safety of today's racecars, both drivers walked away from the inferno with minimal injuries and zero burns. For Rasmussen, his night would be over as his #92 Mo-Dane Trucking / RPM Sales & Service / Vital Signs Chevrolet Impala suffered a bent frame in the impact. This also meant that his hopes of finishing his season in that 10th points position were also over. The team will head back to the shop thankful that their driver is uninjured and begin making repairs for the coming 2013 racing season.
As for "Terrible" Tim McDougald and the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Fast Track Sims / Ringers Gloves Toyota Camry, the night was much different. McDougald came to the track without his car due to budget constraints but found himself in the announcer's booth calling the Super Late Model Main Events along side track announcer Scott Ellsworth. "Terrible" Tim took to the microphone quickly assisting Ellsworth with color commentary and insights from a driver's perspective as well as extra information gained from talking to drivers between Main Events while walking through the pits.
The toughest part for McDougald would come when his brother was in that previously mentioned incident involving the huge fire. "Terrible" Tim found himself torn between emotional strife over his brother's situation and the need to keep the fans in attendance calm and unalarmed. "That was a tough one for me," said McDougald. "On the one hand I wanted to just bolt out of there and go help my brother get out of that car. On the other hand I felt like I had a duty to keep the fans calm and make them understand that it isn't quite as bad as it might look. Keeping your emotions in check isn't something I'm particularly good at, so it was a tough situation for me. But not near as tough a situation as the one my brother was dealing with. I'm just happy he was ok."
The small family team based in a little shop in Graham, Washington has a lot of work ahead of them to prepare for the 2013 racing season. The plans now include the rebuild of the damaged #92 Mo-Dane Trucking / RPM Sales & Service / Vital Signs Chevrolet Impala; a car they only raced twice after Rasmussen purchased it during this season, and the complete build of a new and hopefully improved #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Fast Track Sims / Ringers Gloves Toyota Camry. A large task ahead of them, but a dedication to return to the Speedway will see it through.
