Lewis knows way around Idaho 200

Doug Pace The Spokesman-Review
For 11 years, Stateline Speedway has held the NAPA Auto Parts Idaho 200.

In the last three years, one man has taken the top prize back to Washington – Gary Lewis.

When Lewis wins at the prestigious Montana 200, he’s followed it up with a win two weeks later in Post Falls over the last three summers. This year the Snohomish, Wash., driver rides into town with four straight Montana victories and will look to add a unique quadruple of Idaho and Montana 200 wins to his resume.

Standing in his way will be three-time Inland Northwest Super Stock Association champion David Garber, former NASCAR Pro Series West driver Kevin Richards and a slew of regional late model talent out to dethrone Lewis.

Having a car capable of winning on the high-banked quarter-mile of Montana Raceway Park and the flatter Stateline Speedway is one key to a potential fourth straight Gem State victory, Lewis said.

“The tracks are very different indeed, but thanks to Mike Leary’s Shock Shop we have been able to build a handling package that works great at both,” Lewis said. “Each one is a multigrooved track and that fits my driving style very well.”

In the past, Lewis has been on the same Hoosier racing tire at each of the Montana 200 and Idaho 200 victories he’s achieved. This year Stateline will use a tire that is used on the Rocky Mountain Challenge Series, which runs a preliminary event Saturday night. The change in tires got the attention of the three-time champion.

“I’m sure it (the change in tires) will require some minor adjustments on our SEFNCO Communications Chevrolet, but then again, you’re always going to have to fine-tune a car at every track anyway so, as they say, that’s racing.”

Across the Northwest, tracks hold annual events similar to the Idaho 200. In Yakima, it’s the Apple Cup, which entered its 45th year last spring; at Wenatchee Valley, it’s their annual September 200-lap race; and the $15,000 to win Montana 200 that drew 45 drivers just two weeks ago. Over the history of those events, no driver has dominated like Lewis has in the last three seasons. The historical nature of his runs has not begun to set in, he said.

“Honestly, I have not put much thought into the historical part of what we’ve been able to do over the last few year,” he said. “We just go out and perform with hard work, learning and dedication by the team and myself, and that has been able to get us some wins in the books along the way. We hope we’re able to do that again this weekend at Stateline Speedway with a fourth NAPA Idaho 200 victory.”

Keen, Gue Building More Than Just Momentum

By Michael Harker

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Drivers of the No. 41 Global Diving & Salvage Mazda RX-8 in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series GT class, Leh Keen and James Gue know what it is like to have built successful careers and relationships, especially during the past few seasons in GRAND-AM Road Racing competition.

Keen is coming off a 2009 season that saw him co-win four races and take the Rolex Series GT title along with co-driver Dirk Werner. Meanwhile, Gue finished second in the 2008 and 2009 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Grand Sport (GS) points standings with Bret Seafuse, driving for JBS Motorsports. So it comes as no surprise that the pair is currently fourth in the GT championship, fighting for podium finishes weekly and at times even a victory. They have three podiums and eight top 10s - all consecutively - in nine races this season.

"James and I are two pretty laidback guys," Keen said. "I would say we are pretty different from each other but we get along great. He knows the importance of keeping the car in great shape and makes sure he does that each race."

Added Gue: "Driving with Leh has been good this year and I think we complement each other well. We get along off the track, and we push each other on the track. The biggest difficulty we have is fitting us both comfortably in the car as there is about eight inches difference in height between us."

So it's safe to say they continue to build the Dempsey Racing program - which last season consisted of one Mazda RX-8, the No. 40 for team co-owners Joe Foster and Patrick Dempsey. In the process of building their friendship, Keen and Gue are in the process of building even more outside the racing community.

The pair's efforts have been supported by Team Seattle, which raises funds for and awareness of the Seattle (Wash.) Children's Hospital. Team Seattle has, in the past, regularly raised money with a car competing in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. This season, Team Seattle stepped up its efforts for an entire season. While that gives Keen and Gue a chance at winning a championship, it also raises more money for Team Seattle; in fact, all the team's prize money is donated to the Seattle Children's Hospital. Through their efforts on the track, the race team is also helping to build a hybrid operating room, which will improve the way cardiac operations will function.

"I was fortunate enough to visit the hospital earlier in the year and see first-hand the impact the racing program has on the hospital," Gue said. "We have had a tremendous amount of support from everyone at Team Seattle."

Two of the team's biggest supporters have been Seattle natives John and Jeri Graham, owners of Global Diving and longtime supporters of the Seattle Children's Hospital. That led them to the Team Seattle program, and after attending their first race just last year, they backed a full season for the No. 41 for the entire 2010 campaign.

So far, the relationship has proven worthwhile in several ways. Gue and the Grahams visited the Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, prior to the race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, where Gue signed autographs and visited with children. Several team members also expect to visit The Montreal Children's Hospital in August during the penultimate round of the 12-race season at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Seattle Children's Hospital, Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Montreal Children's Hospital are all participating hospitals in The Children's Circle of Care, which advances philanthropy that supports patient care, teaching, research and advocacy through educating and recognizing leading benefactors.

"We've always supported the children's hospital on a smaller scale, and now we're gradually advancing that," John Graham said. "We think we have something to contribute that will be beneficial to the hospital. I think we've got an extremely good group of folks here that we weren't responsible for putting together, but the chemistry is good and we've got good drivers.

"We think that our investment is probably going to get a three- or four-time return on money for the hospital. We're not in it for us. We're in it for the hospital. That's why we're here."

In addition to the Grahams, other members of Team Seattle have worked with the Dempsey Racing stable in 2010. Some even shuttled drivers and team members between pit lane and campers during the Rolex 24.

Heading into the final quarter of the season, all involved with the No. 41 camp, including Gue and Keen, expect to meet one final goal - winning a race. They finished a season-best second at Lime Rock Park, and gave Dempsey Racing it's first-ever podium at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"We were on fire at the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen (third place)," Keen said, "and the short course is one I really enjoy. We had a great setup for that race and I know we will be fast right out of the box for the sprint race."

Added Gue: "The Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle crew has given us a great car at every race this year. We hope to finish out the season on a high note."

"Terrible" Tim Rolls Again

Tacoma, Washington
7-27-2010 – After mechanical failures sidelined "Terrible" Tim McDougald and his #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Cornwell Tools Toyota Camry, Tim and his HayWire Racing team will once again rejoin the competition at Southsound Speedway this Saturday, July 31st.

In a season that has the small family run team shaking their collective heads in disbelief, the coming race weekend is one of the few bright spots on an otherwise dismal 2010 schedule. Having spent all winter building a new car, the HayWire Racing team entered 2010 with a renewed vigor and a competitive swagger. But that attitude was quickly snatched from the team after only a couple very short runs in the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Cornwell Tools Toyota Camry ended with mechanical failures each time, the last one sidelining the team for the better part of two months.

But in their typical "never say die" way, the team went to work on the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Cornwell Tools Toyota Camry to get it and driver "Terrible" Tim back to the track. "I can't thank my guys enough," said an excited "Terrible" Tim. "We have had so many problems this year that some times you wonder if you should just try again next year. But these guys always get it back together and here we are, ready to race again."

With only 4 races left on the schedule, "Terrible" Tim rejoins the competition with a different goal. "We started the season chasing the 'Rookie-of-the-Year' title," said McDougald. "But that didn't work out so well. Then we kind of readjusted the goal to running competitively. Now I think it's just to finish a race. I've never had a season like this one. We've always run pretty competitive; I've never seen anything like this. I have to thank my guys for just hanging in there and my sponsors for being so patient. Hopefully we can close out this season with some solid runs and show that we can compete with the field."

Be sure to catch the HayWire Racing team, the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Cornwell Tools Toyota Camry and driver "Terrible" Tim McDougald as they return to competition at Southsound Speedway in Tenino, Washington this coming weekend, July 31st.

Minegar Looks for Success at Idaho 200; Bell to Make First Start of Season

Two-Time Championship Team Set for Busy Weekend of Racing at North Idaho Event
BOISE, IDAHO (July 28, 2010) Dave Minegar, driver of the BodyBuilding.Com Chevrolet, continues his steady march to the top of the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series standings. And while the championship is not out of the question with four races left to go on the 2010 campaign, the two-time series champion is only thinking about winning. Next up for Minegar is the NAPA Auto Parts Idaho "200" weekend at Stateline Stadium Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho.

Minegar has two top five and three top ten performances so far this season in six starts. He also set a new qualifying record at Meridian (ID) Speedway back in June but those are the high points in a season where he has been plagued by mechanical issues.

"I am really eager to be back at Stateline," Minegar offered. "We had a car capable of winning last time we were there and led some laps before we had a flat tire." Minegar competed in the RMCS event at Stateline back in 2008 but missed last year's edition in order to be home with his wife Heidi for the birth of their first son Ethan.

"It was tough not to be at Stateline last year especially with Craig (Bell- Minegar's teammate) winning, but we are working on some new set-ups that will hopefully prove successful this weekend," Minegar continued. "Setups are always changing and it is going to be hot so it will be interesting to see what kind of grip there will be."

The team will receive a boost this weekend as Dave Earl rejoins the team after a year-long battle with cancer. "We are thrilled to have Dave Earl returning to the team after battling cancer," Minegar stated. "He had his last chemo session last week and he is excited to rejoin the team!"

With the season winding down, Minegar's plan is simple. Win. "Our strategy is to race for wins," Minegar continued. "The points will come if we can win races and I think we are close. Everyone is working really hard to put the BodyBuilding.Com Chevrolet back in victory lane."

After spending this season as Minegar's crew chief, Craig Bell will return to the seat of the #99 in order to defend his RMCS Duel for the 200 win from last season. Bell is the only RMCS regular to have top five finishes in both previous races at Stateline. "My car owner Pat really wanted me back in the car for this race and it would sure be a lot of fun to go back up there and win again," Bell stated.

"I am excited to have Craig Bell back in the #99," Minegar said. He won the RMCS race last year and it would be great to have both cars battle for the win this year. I am also really looking forward to racing in the 200 on Sunday. That is a race I want to win." The top six points finishers from the RMCS event on Saturday will be locked into the the Idaho "200" on Sunday.

Minegar is currently fifth in the RMCS point standings heading into the final four races of the season. He is 65-points out of fourth and 154-points out of the top spot. A maximum of 239 points are available for each event with points being awarded for qualifying, heat race finishing position, main event finishing position, and passing points (3-points per positions gain from original starting position. The RMCS inverts up to 20-cars in each event). A big night at Stateline could put Minegar right back in the title fight.

Minegar racing is owned by Pat Minegar and is sponsored by BodyBuilding.com, Redline, Gaspari Nutrition, Supreme Nutrition, MusclePharm, Optimum Nutrition, A-1 Heating & Air Conditioning, Lennox, and Dillon Auto Craft. Minegar is in his seventh season in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series and is a two-time series champion (06, 08) with 57 career starts, six wins, 23 top five and 43 top ten finishes along with twenty-two (22) career Sharp Powder Coating Fast Time Awards and most career money won. Minegar's crew is led this weekend by Dave Earl, Larry Bowers, Matt Wolfkiel, Kirk Wartman, Ron Minegar, Heidi Minegar, and Tyson Garten.

Thompson Focused on Point Battle Heading into Round Seven

Brett Thompson Hoping to Keep Hot Streak Alive This Weekend at Stateline
JEROME, IDAHO (July 28, 2010) Brett Thompson of Jerome, Idaho is looking to keep his momentum rolling in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series as the series heads to Northern Idaho for the annual RMCS stop that is part of the big NAPA Auto Parts Idaho 200 this weekend. While Thompson is rolling in RMCS action this season, the race at Stateline Stadium Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho will be the veteran racer's first ever visit to the 1/4-mile facility.

Thompson has five top three finishes this season in the RMCS with his only blemish coming at RMR back in May where he finished 15th. The last time Thompson visited a track for the first time, he won; picking up his first career series victory on the 1/4-mile oval of Meridian (ID) Speedway back in June.

While both are quarter-mile ovals, the similarity may stop there. "I am optimistic about our chances," Thompson said. "We have been pretty good all season and we just plan to do what we have been doing all year and hope it works as well at Stateline. We are really working on our qualifying package and we hope we hit it on Saturday night."

Thompson, a veteran of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series for the past decade, is only making a handful of starts in the West's oldest stock car series thus freeing up his schedule in order to compete closer to home. An while a nine hour drive to north Idaho is not exactly close, the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series has added some new found excitement in Thompson's racing career.

"This series is as tough as any out there," Thompson said. "In some ways it is tougher as you have to not only race hard and smart with the invert, you have to use a lot of tire strategy with the tire rules. I was not excited about some of the rules at first but I like it. The guys are some great racers and it is simply a lot of fun to go out and race and not really worry about hurting the car. There is a lot of respect and good hard competition."

While many of his fellow racers will compete in two or all three nights of racing at the Idaho 200, Thompson is solely focused on the RMCS Duel for the 200 Saturday night. "We have a family reunion on Sunday so I will need to get back home," Thompson said. "We are in a position for the championship with only four races left and since we only have one car we don't need to put ourselves in an difficult position."

"We are looking forward to the race at Stateline," Thompson continued. "I have heard the fans are awesome and the track really puts on a good show. The race on Saturday will be a good one and I hope we come out on top."

Thompson Motorsports is a premier motorsports organization based in Jerome, Idaho providing complete race car preparation and fabrication supporting the local grassroots racer and experienced professional driver. TMS fields cars in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR K&N Pro Series, CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series, Intermountain Pro Truck Series, and entries at local area short tracks. TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (July 28, 2010) Jonathon Gomez of Twin Falls, Idaho will take a break from his NASCAR K&N Pro Series and SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour championship title chases and head to Northern Idaho for the annual NAPA Auto Parts Idaho 200 weekend at Stateline Stadium Speedway in Post Falls, Idaho. Gomez will compete in three different Late Model race series' logging over 400 laps of competition. Three races; two cars, one goal. Winning!

His weekend odyssey begins on Friday evening in the INSSA Duel for the 200 100-lap contest. The Inland Northwest Super Stock Association competes primarily at the 1/4-mile paved oval at Stateline and the event will be their third of the season. On the line in the race is not only the winner's trophy, but the top six finishers will be locked into the starting field for Sunday's Idaho 200. Gomez finished third in the INSSA Duel in 2009.

On Saturday night, Gomez will rejoin old friends and compete in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series 100-lap Duel for the 200 presented by NAPA Auto Parts. Gomez finished 5th in the 2009 RMCS points with five top five finishes and two Sharp Powder Coating Fast Time Awards including setting a track record at Stateline last season with a quick lap of 13.466 seconds. Gomez is looking for redemption after a 15th place finish last season in the RMCS Duel.

The top six points finishers for the RMCS event will earn starting positions for the Idaho 200. The RMCS awards points for qualifying, heat race finishes, feature event finish position, and passing points based on positions gained in the race from the original starting position.

Then on Sunday, Gomez will turn his attention to the NAPA Auto Parts Idaho "200". Last season Gomez finished 5th in the event and after an impressive year so far in the NASCAR West and the SRL where has posted two wins, six top five and eight top ten finishes, he is looking to carry that momentum into this weekend's racing action.

"I am really looking forward to the racing this weekend," Gomez said. "The Spokane area is where I grew up so I will have a lot of friends and family there. I enjoy the track at Stateline and the different competition is going to be a lot of fun. Plus you can't beat three nights of racing."

Gomez sits in the fourth position in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West standings, just 19-points out of third place and 137-points behind the series leader. After seven races he has scored two top five and four top ten performances with his best finish this season of second place at Iowa Speedway back in May. In the SRL Southwest Tour, Gomez is second in the standings just seven points out of the lead on the strength of two dominating wins this season.

Jonathon Gomez is in his fourth year of competitive racing having won local track titles at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls and competed in various Late Model events the past couple of seasons. He has started 15 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races since 2008 scoring eight top ten finishes and is in his first full-time season in the NKNPS. Gomez will contend for championships in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series as well as the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour this season.

Jonathon Gomez is supported by Heritage Cattle Company, Century Boatland, J&C Custom Harvesting, United Oil, Modern Machinery, DJ Safety, and Gomez Farms. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series from Portland will be televised on SPEED Channel Thursday, July 29 at 3PM PT. The next event on the SRL schedule is September 4 at Toyota Speedway. MALSAM RETURNS TO IOWA WITH NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES

NEWTON, Iowa (July 28, 2010) — While the NASCAR Nationwide Series is making just its second visit to Iowa Speedway this weekend, it’ll be Pacific Northwest native Tayler Malsam’s third stop at a track in which he’s had some success in the past.

The 21-year-old from Sammamish, Wash., recorded top-10 finishes in his previous races on the .875-mile variably banked oval, first in an ARCA stock car race in 2008 and then in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series last September.

The U.S. Cellular 250 will be broadcast at 4:30 p.m. (PT) Saturday on ESPN2. The network will begin its coverage with NASCAR Countdown at 4 p.m. (PT). Malsam will be making his seventh Nationwide Series start for Braun Racing in the No. 10 Toyota and for the sixth time he will have Iron Horse Jeans as primary sponsor.

Current point leader Brad Keselowski won the inaugural Nationwide Series event last year at Iowa Speedway, starting 11th and leading 121 of 250 laps in a race that featured 12 caution periods. Braun Racing’s No. 10 finished fifth in that race with Kelly Bires behind the wheel.

Saturday’s race marks the first of three straight starts Malsam will make for Braun Racing, with Watkins Glen (Aug. 7) and Michigan (Aug. 14) next on his schedule. Malsam didn’t take part in last weekend’s race at O’Reilly Raceway Park near Indianapolis due to a prior scheduling commitment at Braun Racing. Instead, Indiana native Derrick Griffin made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut, finishing 36th after a single-car incident early in the race.

Malsam finished 18th in his prior start in the No. 10 Iron Horse Jeans Toyota, on July 17 at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill. In that race, Malsam was collected in a multi-car accident that started when race winner Carl Edwards spun out Keselowski on the frontstretch as they headed for the checkered flag. NASCAR placed Edwards and Keselowski on probation for the remainder of the season after that incident.

A venue visited by NASCAR, ARCA and the Indy Racing League, Iowa Speedway is a favorite of many because the variable banking — 12-14 degrees in the turns, 10 degrees on the frontstretch and 4 degrees on the backstretch — allows drivers to be competitive while racing in either the high or low groove. The speedway was designed by former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace and it was the first track built with SAFER barriers surrounding the entire perimeter.

With temperatures hovering near 100 degrees Main event winners include Mike Fought in the 7-UP 360 Sprint Cars, Colton Fisher in the Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornets, Derrick Kapalo in the Ephrata Pioneer Muffler 2 Pure Stocks, Skyler Leseman with the Pepsi Cola Street Stocks and Bobby Wheeler, Jr. in the visiting Vintage Modifieds.

Fought stalked early race leader Whitney Nolan repeatedly putting pressure on the leader. Nolan was having his best evening of the year and on a few different laps actually pulled away from Fought. Fought took advantage of a slight wobble in the middle of turns 1 and 2 and drove underneath Nolan down the back stretch for the lead. At the checkered flag it was Fought, Nolan, Adam Smith, Joe Smith and Jatender Veenstra. Fought set fast time and won the Heat race. Veenstra won the Trophy Dash keeping Fought from a clean sweep in the 7-UP 360 Sprint division.

It seems like the upper hand in the Pepsi Cola Street Stocks belongs to Skyler Leseman. Leseman won his second Main Event in a row. He also set fast time during qualifying. James Stratfull seems to be getting a handle on his car as well taking home Trophy Dash and Heat race victories.

The Ephrata Pioneer Muffler 2 Pure Stock class featured wins from Jacob McGraw in the A Trophy Dash and A Heat race. Dustin Kapalo returned to racing action at Ephrata Raceway Park with wins in the B Dash and B Heat. Setting fast time was Dallas White. Derrick Kapalo won the Main Event.

For the Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornets it was a non-point night to honor their friend Tayler Blackburn. Blackburn; the 2009 class champion, passed away from injuries in a non-racing auto accident last week and the drivers showed up run some laps and show support for the family. Colton Fisher set fast time won the Heat Race and the Main Event. Tyler Redin spoiled the clean sweep with the Heat Race win.

Visiting Ephrata Raceway Park was the Vintage Modified Racing Association teams. Eight cars and drivers made their way from Southwest Washington to compete on the ¼ mile paved oval. It was a great night for Bobby Wheeler, Jr. as he won the Main Event going away. Jim Jones was the Trophy Dash winner and Mike Clother won the Heat race.

Saturday night July 31st is Fan Appreciation Night at ERP. All fans will pay just $5.25, family passes for 2 adults and 3 kids are $20.00 and kids 5 and under get in free. Race reports and other information are always available at EphrataRacewayPark.com.

Jonathon Gomez Shines with SRL Victory; On Fumes at Portland

Gomez Inches Closer to SRL Title and Finishes 12th in NKNPS Event
TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (July 20, 2010) Jonathon Gomez of Twin Falls, Idaho scored his second career SRL Southwest Tour victory Saturday night to move within seven points of the championship lead after six races. His celebration at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA was short lived though as he and the team chartered a flight back to Portland, OR where he competed on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series event on Sunday afternoon. Gomez ran in the top ten all day and was looking at a top five finish only to run short of fuel on the 1.98-mile road course and finish in the twelfth position.

Gomez started the weekend out practicing at Irwindale on Friday night where he was among the fastest cars in all sessions. He then flew to Portland for practice on the road course in the NKNPS cars before heading back to Irwindale on Saturday afternoon where he qualified third for the SPEARS Manufacturing "100" on the half-mile paved oval.

The top ten cars were inverted so Gomez would start the 100-lap race from the seventh position. Coming off a sixth place finish at Toyota Speedway two weeks ago in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, Gomez was confident about his chances.

He used the early laps to let the field sort out then quickly began to establish himself in the race. Over the first dozen laps he steadily moved his way into the top three and by lap 18 he took the point and never looked back. Although, over the closing laps he faced repeated challenges, he never wavered and dominated the race.

"It was an awesome run for the team" Gomez said. "Ron Copeland and the rest of the guys did a great job and this car was a blast to drive."

Gomez then headed to the airport and flew to Portland where he qualified tenth for the 64-lap Bi-Mart Support the Troops "125" on Sunday. Gomez finished 11th in the last series road course event back in June at Infineon Raceway and applied lessons learned to run in the top ten the entire race.

The flat layout of PIR is a much driver as it is set-up and the Craig Raudman led crew hit their marks all weekend. While running sixth over the closing laps, Gomez was in position to post a top five finish only to run short on fuel during a green, white, checkered finish. He remained on the lead lap but dropped to 12th in the final running order.

"It was disappointing but fuel is always a gamble on road courses," Gomez offered. "We had a great weekend and a great car and we'll go onto the next event and try to get some of the points back. We have two really great teams and this has really be a fun season and I can't wait until the next event."

Gomez lost one position in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West standings and now sits fourth, just 19-points out of third place and 137-points behind the series leader. After seven races he has scored two top five and four top ten performances with his best finish this season of second place at Iowa Speedway back in May.

Gomez will contend for championships in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series as well as the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour this season where he second in the championship standings (7-points out of first) after scoring his second series win this past weekend.

Jonathon Gomez is supported by Heritage Cattle Company, Century Boatland, J&C Custom Harvesting, United Oil, Modern Machinery, DJ Safety, and Gomez Farms. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series from Portland will be televised on SPEED Channel Thursday, July 29 at 3PM PT. After a long break, the next event on the SRL schedule is September 4 back at Toyota Speedway. Next up for Gomez is the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series event July 31-Aug 1 for the Idaho "200" weekend at Stateline Stadium Speedway in Post Falls, ID. Malsam 18th in wild end to NASCAR Nationwide race at Gateway‏

MADISON, Ill. (July 17, 2010) — After fighting handling and communication issues for most of Saturday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Gateway International Raceway, Pacific Northwest native Tayler Malsam found himself in the wrong place twice in the closing laps before finishing 18th.

“We were way too tight all day, couldn’t get up off the turns,” Malsam said after the race. “Then the radio went out and I couldn’t talk to the crew. Everything bad that could happen did in one day. We were lucky to come out with a top-20 finish.”

In fact, the No. 10 Iron Horse Jeans Toyota driven by the 21-year-old from Sammamish, Wash., was a smoking wreck when it slid across the finish line at the end of the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250. Along with several other drivers, Malsam was collected in a frontstretch wreck started when race winner Carl Edwards spun Brad Keselowski after both came out of turn 4 heading to the checkered flag.

Keselowski, who had led 136 of 200 laps, hit the outside wall and then came back across the track to strike the wall separating pit road from the track, causing a huge pileup as following drivers checked up or maneuvered to avoid him. After getting hit hard by Shelby Howard, Keselowski’s wrecked car slid across the stripe to give the series point leader a 14th-place finish.

Reed Sorenson, Malsam’s Braun Racing teammate, finished second with pole sitter Trevor Bayne in third, Paul Menard fourth and Steve Wallace rounding out the top five. Brian Scott, another Braun Racing driver, finished sixth.

While other drivers wrecked or dropped behind with mechanical problems on a hot, humid night at the mostly flat 1.25-mile oval, Malsam seemed poised to record a workmanlike top-25 finish as the laps wound down. But with six laps to go to the end, Malsam and Joe Nemechek were collected when Justin Allgaier spun out after cutting down a tire as a result of racing three-wide with Bayne and Wallace.

That caution set up a two-lap sprint to the finish, with Edwards and Keselowski dueling for the lead. After Edwards moved ahead to take the white flag as leader, Keselowski tried root him out of the groove entering Turn 2. Edwards went wide, but pulled ahead again down the backstretch before Keselowski got the advantage entering Turn 3. Keselowski pulled ahead through the final turn before Edwards used the nose of his car to spin him and take the win.

"I couldn't let him take it from me. I had to do what I had to do,” Edwards said in Victory Lane. “I think he could have gotten me without hitting me. I think his car was good enough we could have been side by side at the finish line. I would have much rather had that. But we got the trophy."

Malsam started from the 20th spot on the grid, his best qualifying result in six career Nationwide Series races, but he slid back several positions early on and fell a lap down. After getting his lap back with the Lucky Dog free pass, Malsam lost his radio communications but he settled in to running just outside the top-20, eventually going two laps down on the mostly-flat 1.25-mile oval.

“We missed the setup in general from the start of the weekend,” Malsam said. “We struggled all race long but now we’ll put it behind us and look forward to doing a better job at Iowa.”

Malsam will miss the next Nationwide Series race at O’Reilly Raceway Park on July 24 because Braun Racing has prior sponsorship commitments. He will return to series action at Iowa Speedway on July 31

Minegar Ready to Turn Season Around at RMR

BOISE, IDAHO (July15, 2010) Dave Minegar, driver of the BodyBuilding.Com Chevrolet, knows the highs of racing after winning two CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenges Series titles (06, 08). But with all the highs there can be some lows and this season has been one of his toughest in his seven-year series career. He and his Pat Minegar owned team are solely focused on clawing their way back into the championship hunt after falling to sixth in the standings. Their quest for a third series title renews this Saturday night at the high-banked oval of Rocky Mountain Raceways outside Salt Lake City, Utah.

Minegar knows a thing or two about getting around RMR. In twenty previous series starts at the 3/8-mile pave oval, Minegar has ten top five performances including two wins. "We have always been fast at RMR," Minegar offered. "We learned some things at Meridian that we think will translate to RMR and with the point's battle tightening up we hope to take advantage."

Minegar has set the standard for speed in the RMCS by capturing twenty-two (22) career Sharp Powder Coating Fast Time Awards. The next driver in the ranking has eight. "Our team has placed a lot of emphasis on qualifying," Minegar said. "Qualifying fast means you have the opportunity to earn the most points for an event. That is our focus the rest of the season."

Minegar's last trip to RMR back in May resulted in a fourth place finish. "With only five races left on the schedule the entire team is focused on the championship," Minegar said. "It starts with qualifying fast and then having a good finish. The hot temperatures are going to challenge all the teams but we believe we have a car that can win."

Minegar sits sixth in the standings after five races with only two top five finishes. Despite his record this season, Minegar is only 151-points out of the top spot. A deficit that can easily be erased over the next five races, barring any more bad luck. "If we can finish all the laps the rest of the way, then we can be right there at the end and that will make for a pretty exciting year," Minegar said.

Minegar is in his seventh season in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series and is a two-time series champion (06, 08) with 56 career starts, six wins, 23 top five and 42 top ten finishes along with twenty-two (22) career Sharp Powder Coating Fast Time Awards and most career money won. Minegar's crew is led by crew chief Craig Bell and team members Larry Bowers, Matt Wolfkiel, Kirk Wartman, Ron Minegar, Heidi Minegar, and Tyson Garten.

Thompson Rolling into RMR After Dominating RMCS Action at Meridian

JEROME, IDAHO (July 15, 2010) Brett Thompson of Jerome, Idaho made a statement in his bid for the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series championship after winning his first career event three weeks ago at Meridian Speedway and closed to within 24-points of the championship lead. This weekend, Thompson heads to the ultra-fast oval of Rocky Mountain Raceways outside Salt Lake City, Utah in round six of the ten race Late Model Series.

Thompson has four top three finishes this season with his only blemish coming at RMR back in May where he finished 15th. After claiming his first career series victory he is focused on the backing it up while being mindful of the tight point's battle.

"We have had a really good year and a lot of fun," Thompson said. "This series is quite a challenge with the tire rule (two new tires per race) so sometimes you give up a little in order to gain something down the road. We had 200-lap tires at Meridian in order to save our new tires for RMR and the next event at Stateline. We feel really good about our car and think we will have a good run Saturday night."

This trip to RMR will be entirely different then the last two visits. "It is going to be hot this weekend and that changes just about everything," Thompson said. "New tires will help when the track gets slick in the July sun, but we are not the only ones playing this strategy. As it always seems to work out, the teams that stay out of trouble will an advantage."

While racing for a championship can alter how a driver approaches a race, playing it too conservative can cost you as well. "Qualifying is the key element in this series," Thompson said. "If you do not qualify among the top five then you can get bit pretty hard in the points. RMR has plenty of room to race and there is enough time to work your way to the front and that is where the points can really stack up." (The RMCS inverts the top 20 cars and awards passing points for positions gained from the driver's original starting position).

Thompson's win at Meridian Speedway allowed him to close to within 24-points of leader John Newhouse. "I never thought my first win in the series would come at Meridian but I was thrilled," Thompson offered. "I really want to win at RMR and our whole team has prepared our car to do just that. Hopefully we can make it two in a row."

Thompson Motorsports is a premier motorsports organization based in Jerome, Idaho providing complete race car preparation and fabrication supporting the local grassroots racer and experienced professional driver. TMS fields cars in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR K&N Pro Series, CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series, Intermountain Pro Truck Series, and entries at local area short tracks. TMS has corporate partnerships with Rich Thompson Trucking Inc. (RTTI), Ron's Rear Ends, United Oil, VaCom Technologies, Windmill Inn and Suites, and Speedbear. Jonathon Gomez Geared for Double Duty This Weekend

TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (July 15, 2010) Jonathon Gomez of Twin Falls, Idaho will have one of the most challenging weekend's of racing of his young career as he chases titles in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour. Saturday night, Gomez will compete in the SRL event at the half-mile paved oval of Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA and then immediately after the race, hop on a charter flight and fly to Portland, OR for the Bi-Mart Salute to the Troops "125" on the nearly two-mile road course layout of Portland Int'l Raceway Sunday afternoon.

"We had this weekend circled on our calendar as we planned out our season," Gomez said. "We have two great teams and have prepared for weekend's like this. I feel good about our chances at both races."

Gomez is coming off a sixth place outing two weeks ago at Toyota Speedway in NASCAR K&N Pro Series action to close within 96-point's of the lead on the strength of four top ten finishes. "We had a good run at Irwindale but it did not come easy," Gomez offered. "We have momentum heading into this weekend and I am pretty excited."

The Portland event is the second road course race of the season in the NKNPS and Gomez believes he is capable of running up front despite his lack of road-racing experience. "We had a top ten car at Infineon and I know we can be in the top five at Portland," Gomez offered. Gomez finished eleventh at Infineon in June.

On the SRL side of things, Gomez has only one finish outside the top ten this year and if not for a racing incident at Orange Show, he would be leading the standings. "We want to win races and the championship," Gomez continued. "We think we have a really shot at it in both series' and that has been our focus since the season began."

Gomez currently sits third in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West standings, just 96-points out of first, after six races with two top five and four top ten performances this season. His best finish this season is a second place performance among the drivers in the NKNPS-West at Iowa Speedway back in May.

Jonathon Gomez is in his fourth year of competitive racing having won local track titles at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls and competed in various Late Model events the past couple of seasons. He has started 14 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races since 2008 scoring eight top ten finishes and is in his first full-time season in the NKNPS. Gomez will contend for championships in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series as well as the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour this season where he third in the championship standings (37-points out of first) after two consecutive top two finishes.

Gomez will round out the month of July by competing in the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series July 31-Aug 1 in the big Idaho "200" weekend Stateline Stadium Speedway in Post Falls, ID. MALSAM RETURNS TO NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES ACTION AT GATEWAY

MADISON, Ill. (July 15, 2010) — After a week off, Pacific Northwest native Tayler Malsam is ready to resume racing in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series and what better location to return to action than at the track where he scored his best career finish?

Once again driving for Braun Racing in the No. 10 Iron Horse Jeans Toyota, Malsam will make his sixth series start in the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at 5:15 p.m. (PT) on Saturday at Gateway International Raceway. Live coverage of the race will be provided by ESPN2, beginning with NASCAR Countdown at 4 p.m. (PT). The cable network will also air qualifying at 1:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.

Gateway, a 1.25-mile slightly-banked egg-shaped oval that some have likened to a flat Darlington, is where Malsam finished fifth in a 2009 Camping World Truck Series race — his best NASCAR result to date. Although the 21-year-old started 17th in that truck race, Gateway isn’t a track that always rewards a good qualifying effort. Just one of 13 Nationwide Series races there have been won from the pole — Martin Truex Jr. in 2004 — and drivers have made it to Victory Lane from as far back on the starting grid as the ninth row.

Saturday’s race at Gateway marks the first of three straight “standalone” races where the Nationwide and Cup series do not compete at the same venue. Malsam is slated to run two of the three for Braun Racing, skipping the middle race at O’Reilly Raceway Park on July 24 but returning to action at Iowa Speedway on July 31.

Prior scheduling commitments at Braun Racing meant Malsam was sidelined for the last Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway, where NASCAR veteran David Reutimann drove the No. 10 to a fourth-place finish one night before scoring his second career Sprint Cup victory. Malsam spent the off-time relaxing in Idaho before returning to the East Coast earlier this week to get ready for Gateway.

Although this is an off-weekend for NASCAR’s top series, many Cup regulars are slated to race at Gateway, including current Nationwide point leader Brad Keselowski as well as two-time Gateway winners Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards. Kyle Busch, the defending race winner and Malsam’s former team owner in the truck series, is not scheduled to race.

The Nationwide series will return to Gateway for a second date in October, but the 21-year-old from Sammamish, Wash., isn’t currently scheduled for that race.

In his last series race on July 2 at Daytona, Malsam finished 18th after surviving a wild scramble during a green-white-checkered ending to the Subway Jalapeno 250, the debut of the new Nationwide Series Car of Tomorrow. Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the race in a No. 3 car that carried a retro yellow-and-blue paint scheme to honor his late father, Dale Earnhardt.

LUX PERFORMANCE PREPARES DODGE'S GREATEST VIPER FOR THE STARS

ALOHA, OR - July 10, 2010 - Lux Performance Group, LLC was announced today by Chrysler Group as project manager of the Celebrity Driver Program for the new Dodge Viper Cup. Lux Performance Group has been a Dodge "works" program since 2005 making the Northwest-based operation an obvious choice for the honor of overseeing the preparation of the pair of Dodge Viper ACR-X race cars. Lux Performance, which introduced the Dodge Viper SRT10 to SCCA Club Racing's T1 class winning multiple championships before moving to the Pro Racing World Challenge with the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe in 2007, will be responsible for every aspect of the Celebrity Driver entries in the five- weekend, ten-race series.

The Dodge Viper ACR-X Celebrity Driver program is the latest in the development of Lux Performance Group, LLC. Lux Performance's success with the preparation of race vehicles for lead driver Cindi Lux (Aloha, OR) evolved into building and maintaining race machines for other participants and teams. Eventually, Lux Performance's track record brought them to the highest levels of professional road racing, most often with the Viper brand. In recent years, demand encouraged the successful move into street cars with a specialization in Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler SRT machines. The Dodge Viper Cup marks the first time that Lux Performance will prepare such high-profile cars for a factory-supported series.

Lux Performance Group and the Viper ACR-X. Image by Jeff Boerio.
The Dodge Viper Cup is a one-make series using the new Viper ACR-X as the "spec" car in which all drivers in the Series will contest for victory. The 2010 ACR-X is the newest in the line of Dodge Viper super cars which stretches back to 1991. The ACR-X is the track-only iteration of the Viper ACR, itself an ultra-performance edition of the Dodge Viper. While the ACR is street legal, the new ACR-X is built purely for the track and will be the focal point of a new series which is scheduled to launch at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) July 10-11. Events in Hallet, OK will follow August 14-15, Pocono (PA) International Raceway September 11-12, Miller Motorsport Park in Salt Lake City on October 2-3 and close at Spring Mountain, NV the 23rd-24th of October.
Lux Performance Group's Cindi Lux will help prepare the ten special guest drivers in advance of the race weekends. Lux, herself an accomplished racer with 12 road racing championships on her resume, is not new to training amateur drivers for competition cars. The Aloha, OR-resident has helped train celebrities for the Long Beach Grand Prix Celebrity Race. The honor of racing in the Viper Racing Cup Special Drivers ACR-X will first fall to United States Olympian, bobsledding medalist Mike Kohn and Road & Track magazine's Detroit Editor Shaun Bailey.

All races will be broadcast on Versus on tape-delay with the VIR Round 1 on July 24 at 2:00 PM (ET), VIR Round 2 on July 31 at 2:30 PM. Check local listings and www.viperheadquarters.com for remaining broadcast times.

Quotes
Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge: "Lux Performance Group has been a great partner to Dodge and the Viper brand for five years. Cindi and Fred Lux are a part of the Dodge family and that is very important in this environment. When we looked to add the celebrity aspect to our new ACR-X-based Viper Racing Series, we wanted a trusted partner who knew Vipers and that the Viper community was familiar with. Their background with the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe and SRT10 Club Racing programs as well as Cindi's background working with celebrities in the Long Beach race made Lux Performance a perfect fit. We are looking forward to yet another exciting season working together in the Viper Cup."

Cindi Lux, Driving Coach/CEO: "Bring it on! I love new programs. Dodge has really showed their faith in our program to award us this opportunity. This new spec series is going to be awesome to be part of. I probably will be more nervous watching from pit lane versus being behind the wheel. It is a real honor to have this program under the Lux Performance Group banner and to work with these amazing personalities."

Fred Lux, Engineer/Crew Chief: "This is a new role and venture for our team. Prepping the Vipers will be the easy part since we are used to these great cars. I think Cindi has the more challenging role of coaching these new drivers. But if anybody can do it, she can."

Formula DRIFT Enters Evergreen Speedway

Evergreen Speedway is the oldest track on the circuit and was originally built as a horse-racing track. Located in Monroe, WA, Evergreen Speedway, is only a short distance from Seattle.

The Northwest fans are some of the most die-hard drift fans in the nation. The energy and excitement is often compared to that of Irwindale and the original “House of Drift.” The event’s headline moniker, “Throwdown,” lives up to it’s name as drivers push their vehicles to the limits of the track’s banking and tight transitions through the course resulting in one of the most exciting action-packed events of the season.
