TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (April 4, 2012)- Jonathon Gomez, driver of the #22 Century Boatland Chevrolet in the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour will return to the site of his first career win in the series this Saturday night. Stockton 99 Speedway will host the opening round of the popular Late Model tour with the running of the SPEARS Manufacturing "125".
The race at Stockton will be the first of consecutive weekends for the Idaho native as he balances racing, farming and trucking operations.
Busy Schedule Will Keep Gomez Focused
Jonathon Gomez wins at Stockton 2010
Last season Gomez initially was going to defend his 2010 SRL Southwest Tour championship, but new business opportunities forced the team to make a difficult decision. Race or work?
Work won out. "We really needed to regroup and prepare, so the break has done our team a lot of good," Gomez offered. "We had so much on our plate with our business and we were just making it race to race which took a lot out of the team. This season we are prepared and ready for the challenge."
And while Gomez does not plan to run for the title this season, he and the team are solely focused on winning races. "All our cars are ready to go," Gomez said. "We have freshened everything and have backups in place. We just need to go out and race."
Gomez plans to make at least eight starts in the SRL this season and is especially excited to return to Stockton 99 Speedway this weekend. He scored his first career SRL victory at Stockton in 2010 in his first visit to the quarter-mile paved oval. "That was an awesome night," Gomez responded. "Stockton is a fun track to drive and I know we have another great car for this weekend."
Gomez plans to make more than thirty races this season in the SRL Southwest Tour, NASCAR K&N Pro Series, and Rocky Mountain Challenge Series, leaving precious little time in between shows. "That's the plan, but we first have to keep the cars in one piece for that to happen," Gomez said. "The team is committed and ready and to go back to Stockton and win would be a great boost for everyone."
More than thirty cars are expected for the Stockton event placing a premium on qualifying. "The track is tricky but I like it," Gomez stated. "We just need a solid qualifying lap and to start up front. I know we are going to race really well."
Gomez has 16 career starts in the SRL and has scored three wins, one pole award with 12 top five finishes and 13 finishes in the top 10.
Gomez Motorsports is owned by John Gomez, a successful farmer and businessman, with team support lead by Craig Raudman, a NASCAR championship winning driver. The crew includes: Blaine Bergem, Ron Copeland, Derek Copeland, Kyle Cattanach, and Dave Reed.
